View Full Version : Do you ever worry about how much time you spend gaming?

I was thinking about this the other day - I spend -on average- about 30+ hours a week with a controller of some description in my hands. That's 4-5 hours a day, which is a considerable portion of my life when you add it up over the course of a year or more.

This initially worried me - I had one of those 'what am I doing with my life' moments, and I started looking at ways I should cut down.
However, when I look at it objectively, I don't think it's an unrealistic amount of time:

1) I work a very unsociable shift pattern, meaning I'm very often working when my friends are off and they're working when I'm off - there's very little you can do on a rainy Tuesday...

2) To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't adversely impact my social life. I've never turned down chances to go out and do something specifically to play games, and I've always tried to avoid playing games when I'm with my girlfriend.

3) I very rarely watch TV. The time that many people spend in front of the TV every week is far more than I spend playing games.

When I actually sat back and looked at it, I calmed down a little. I'm active, I have a social life and I don't allow gaming to impact into either of those things - yes, I do spend more time gaming than most people my age, but it's something I enjoy doing, and there are valid reasons for it, and I see nothing unhealthy in that.

Do you ever worry about this kind of thing, or am I just neurotic?

You're just neurotic - go slap yourself for thinking such blasphemous thoughts

Seriously though - if it doesn't impact your life, then no there's no problem

There is nothing wrong with playing, if it doesn't have a say in your personal life, if you manage to do your job, exercise and live your life as well! We all have hobbies :D Some people read books. And they read them a lot more than most of us play games. Everyone has something, and it all takes time :)

Haha social life :-P I suppose considering you dont really do anything else it isnt so bad. That is basically your hobbie.i think after finishing education where your evenings were filled with essays/revision you realise just how little you do.that's life I guess. I know you secretly ditch me for games though!

nope never bothers me. I still do a lot: read, watch movies, go out, go to school, DRINK, go to the gym, see broadway shows.... I'm ok. But YES Jason, I have thought about it. My advice is if it feels good DO IT. :)

When others have prompted the thought I've gone "hmm... nah". Other than that, never thought about it.

So long as it isn't affecting my ability to carry out my life as I wish to live it, I really don't care how much I'm playing or what other people think of said playing.

YES. To be quite honest with you.
Then I try to reassure myself, 4-8 hours a week isnt that bad, but then I have about 15 people who constantly tell me "OMG YOURE ADDICTED YOU NEED HELP". (they clearly havent met other gamers)
Then again, thats most likely the reason WHY I think I play too much.
Bleh. Non-gamers. What can you do

They think 4-8 hours is an addiction?

Ah <.< >.>

Don't ever tell them about us Betty - they'll have us all admitted to an Asylum

Haha, they (meaning my college cronies) still cant get over the fact that I talk to complete strangers via the interwebz. Shoot, they nearly went insane when they realized I wasnt talking to myself & that my headset WASNT just for making me feel all badass.

I was never drunk when conversing with her roommates!

... granted, Aussie 'sober' probably equals the rest of the world's 'drunk' so... >.>
