Announcing: Triple Triad!

The most observant of you will already have noticed a new option on the menu bar at the top of the forums - 'Triple Triad (http://www.mature-gamers.com/forums/tripletriad.php)'.

Now, some of you may well be fapping crazily at that name, others will be thoroughly confused. It's a card battle game that first appeared in Final Fantasy VIII on the Playstation. It was massively popular, and now it's here on MG!

Basically, it works like this:

Every post you make on the forums will now earn you 'Points'. You get 5 points for every post you make, and 10 for every thread you start. These points can then be spent in the shop (http://www.mature-gamers.com/forums/tripletriad.php?do=shop) to buy decks of cards. The prices vary, as will the cards you get in the packs.

Once you've got them, you can then take on other MGers for their hard-earned cards in the Battle Arena. there's 110 cards to collect, so that's a lot of battling to do!
But what if there's no MGers online when you want to play? Simple! You can take on one of the varied computer opponents - they're all of varying skill, and they all have different cards you can take off them!

Don't know how to play? It's easy! Just have a quick scan of the rules here (http://www.mature-gamers.com/forums/tripletriad.php?do=rules) - to start with I've kept things simple - random cards, and the more complicated rules (Same, Plus, Same Wall, Combo) are switched off for computer players.

All that's left to do now is for you guys to dive in and test the game and let me know what you think - the current version is the 'lite' version, which is has some features missing (not to mention the ugly FFVIII card sets!), but if it's popular enough, I'll consider upgrading to the new version.

Oooh this is exciting I've never heard of this before (Never played FF), I will definitely try this out as soon as I have the points haha.

I've set the cheapest pack to be just 10 points for 5 basic low-level cards, so you'll only need two posts (or one thread) to get going.

Sadly there's no function yet to manually set members' Points balance myself, or I'd give everyone a couple of hundred points to get them started...

Ok, at some point today I'll tweak the rules a little - 'random' and 'open' make human vs human games very very lengthy (as me and Lance found out!), so I'll remove them from the CPU players' rules as well.

In addition, just to help those starting out, Phillipe and Teodor are good players to start against - they're not too skilled and don't hold any really scary cards - on the other hand, you don't want to be taking on Ramses anytime soon... ;)

I've made a few tweaks based on my encounters in the 50-60 games I've played so far:


New CPU Player 'Todd' added.
Various CPU card holdings tweaked - harder CPU players now less likely to show weak cards
Ramses Luther Smuckles made more challenging.
CPU players ordered in difficulty - Phillipe is Easiest, Ramses is Hardest.
Change in cost of purchasing many decks - most notably 'High Roller' pack now 1000 Points.
Several new decks added - most notably "One Random Card" for 50 points, and 'level packs' for varying cost.

I must say, Triple Triad is more entertaining that I initially thought it would be. Good way to pass some time too, once you figure it out.

Yeah, I've found my mouse heading in the direction of the battle arena several times when I really should be doing something more constructive.

If the community really gets into it, I'll get the 'full' version which has the capacity for tournaments, as well as two entirely new decks.

Right, two new players for the *really* hardcore players - "Thor!" and "The Wolf".

Check the rules before facing them, they're different for these two.

3x3 grid.
Cards with numbers on four sides.
Alternating turns to lay cards on grid.
If number on the side of your card is higher than the adjacent number on an opposing card, you 'flip' (ie capture) it.
Most cards at end wins.

That's the basic premise. There's minor tweaks like 'elemental' which either adds or subtracts one from your card's numbers depending on whether you match it or not.

It's actually very simple. Easiest way is to play it.

Just go buy a random couple packs of cards and play Phillipe. That's what I did. Had no idea how to play and I still won -- and also figured the basics of the game out :D

Oddness indeed. Try another match and see if that makes any difference to things. If it doesn't make any difference, I'll fault this with the developer.

CTRL+F5 clears the cache, I believe. Deletes the temporary files for that site on your computer and re-downloads them.

Refreshes cache or something. The better answer is: Fixes 95% of internet problems.

Get a couple of test packs and experiment - it's probably the best way of learning the game. The concept is really simple, it's just difficult to explain concisely.

The numbers relate to a side of the card.

Put the card so the number on a side is greater than the number on the side of the card it's adjacent to and you get the other card.

Will the 3's go at each other and become 'Same' or will my card's 3 go against the opposing players 2?

Would be cool if you could see a list of the entire deck, but maybe have the ones you dont have yet show up as shadows that get filled in when you collect them.

I'll give you a confirmation on the filetype as soon as I can. I'm at work at the moment, but give me a few hours until it quietens down and I'll grab my laptop and check the image files for the original TT cards.

As for the number of cards to do, you don't have to stick to just 100 - you can do more if the inspiration strikes you - you can also extend it to characters if you like (although I see you've done that already with Jesse and James.)
