View Full Version : Sports?

So, let's be honest, the stereotypical gamer isn't the most active type. However, in truth, I'm sure most of us are fairly active. Which sports do you indulge in, which do you follow and which teams do you follow?
I do a couple of sports - I play football (soccer) as a goalkeeper, I play cricket when my work schedule allows, and I also play Underwater Hockey (yes, you read that right) on a Sunday morning. I used to do it a lot more seriously, and played at National level for a couple of years, but stopped when I went to college.
As for watching, there's very few things I won't watch. Aside from Cricket and Football, I enjoy the UFC, and most US sports. I'm a Maple Leafs fan for my sins, and I tend to root for the Phillies when I'm watching Baseball.

While I am not exactly a gamer I do generally follow the gay sterotype, sports; whats that?
I go to the gym, thats as sporty as I get.
As far as watching sports, I am a patriotic dude so if Ireland are playing anything I'll follow it.

Ah, so you're one of those guys that always gets the wrong idea when people ask if you want to go to Man City? :p

I wont lie. If someone asked me that on a night out, my response would probably be "Yours or mine so?!". :D

I play a bit of Footy (The awesome Australian variety, AKA AFL) and Soccer whenever I can get my mates together for a game. At school, during the week, that's pretty much every day.
I also watch the same two sports, but I can only be bothered with the games involving the teams I care about.

Use to play AFL (again, the Aussie version) - until I did my knee in... twice.. - but I still follow it madly.
Follow the EPL as well (Tottenham Hotspurs) - UFC, and might watch the Cricket or Basketball if its on
All 'round, I'm probably more sporty than most - I just can't play (which shits me off, I still want to)

I used to play cricket as a kid, but I was put off because, well, I was young and they have bloody retarded rule additions/subtractions for young'uns so I bailed and never got back into it competitively.
I follow cricket with marked interest, all three varieties of football bore me -- but I will play soccer as keeper if the opportunity arises and I'm actually rather good at it -- and I follow them only vaguely enough to know when my brother's AFL team is losing.
As for my active-ness, though, I try to go to the gym at least thrice a week and jog/run when the weather permits.
Oh. And I watch the V8 Supercars whenever I can because they're damned awesome.
I was never really big into playing sports, unless you count track, but most people don't. Anyway, as far as activities now, I love love love running. Also, horseback riding a few times a month at least, and scuba diving when time permits.
As far as watching sports, I'm a pretty rabid football fan. American football, or whatever you non-US guys call it. San Diego Chargers! Whooo!
Baseball's okay. I have a fave team but I don't make an effort to watch. Oh, and I do get into the rare, major sports events, like the Olympics and now the World Cup, even if I don't follow those things during the years they're not on.
Jason, I'm pretty curious about what the heck "underwater hocky" could possibly be!

Hehe, many people are!
It's essentially ice hockey if someone melted the ice and shrunk the sticks down to about 30cm long. :p
You play with a weighted puck on the bottom of the pool, and everyone's wearing snorkels, masks and fins - the main challenge is the fact that if you're on the puck, you're also on the bottom, and hence holding your breath... it makes for some fairly fast and furious play.

Wow - that has to be the oddest game I've ever heard (and surprisingly an Aussie didn't think of it :D)
Anne: We call it Gridiron over here

... I thought everyone just called US football NFL? :/

And... nobody drowns? Dude, that sounds like SO much fun! I think I need to try that. You know... once I get a pool. Someday.
Gridiron? Really? Well you learn something new every day!

No, nobody drowns... you might get kicked in the head every now and then, but those are mostly accidental. ;)

I did say mostly. ;)
Actually, the most painful part of it is losing chunks of your knuckle on the tiles on the bottom of the pool. Gloves are most definitely a big plus - I have an old work glove that's coated with about a half inch of latex rubber on the back to prevent it, because it hurts like hell.
I... I just changed my mind about wanting to play that game!

Bah, any fun game has a bit of blood every now and then :D
Lance

Oh yeah, NFL too :p
And no game is fun unless there's blood involved :D
Jason

True... true. Preferably other people's. :D
It's not too bad actually - the club I play for has about a 50/50 split of men and women, and we all play together in the same game. Injuries are pretty rare considering the fact there are feet flying all over the place.

Jason you break my heart rooting for the phillies. I usually say that if the phillies were playing the Nazis I'd be the biggest Nazi fan you'd ever see :).
I love watching sports, especially football (NFL of course), baseball my favorite (go mets!!) boxing, and NBA basketball.
I used to play as a kid, but now i just go to the gym. I'm always up for a pickup game of anything should the opportunity present itself.

Hehe, the reasoning is that the first game I saw was Phillies vs the Yankees, and I didn't want to support the Yankees, because that would make me like those guys who only support a side because they're successful. Having said that, I think the Phillies have won the World Series since then. Mind you, as a Maple Leafs fan, I think I should be entitled to a little success every now and then. ;)

Yeah, the Mets are a favorite around my household too.

I'm not much into sports, but I do like European football (I think the Mexican league sucks), the occasional boxing and UFC, and sometimes even ice hockey.
My cousin used to play hockey... I don't think he does anymore, but we were pretty close back then, so I'd go to most of his games. On one occasion, I got geared up and my cousin helped me sneak into the game... I'm not a great skater, but I managed not to fall, and I was pretty good at checking and slapshots. :D
When I watched the NHL with my cousin, we followed the Dallas Stars.
In Eurpean football, I follow Real Madrid in Spain, Arsenal and Manchster United in England, and Juventus and Inter in Italy.

I was going to say, I'd be very surprised if you weren't a boxing fan with all the quality fighters coming out of Mexico! :D

After years of sport wilderness I've taken the plunge and got back into Badminton and TKD..used to do Karate when I was young. I blame the UFC for making me want to kick the shit out of people again... Used to do Football at quite a high level till it all got too serious. Can be pretty sweet at other sports too if i put my mind to it. sadly work gets in the way too much now :(

Eh, well I did kick boxing and tae kwon do (however it's spelt) if you can count them as sports.
But I do fuck all right now.
Travelling to Glasgow and having to put up with their pish poor patter & equally as poor accent is enough strenuous activity for me.
