The lights went down at Sony's conference at E3 yesterday as GLaDOS' voice reached out to the audience, announcing the deployment of Valve's surprise.

The Announcement

As the lights came back on, the main screens said "Portal 2" and the skirting screens spoke something special... "PS3". Queue Gabe Newell. Nervously, he approached the stage and opened his speech by thanking Sony for 'not repeatedly punching [him] in the face' and explained his nervousness as being due to Kevin Butler being introduced to him backstage as the 'VP of Sharpening Things'. But that's not what matters here. What matters is that PORTAL 2 IS COMING TO PS3 -- even with some Steam Cloud support, or so I hear.

Following the announcement, they played the following trailer:

The Trailer

Now, me, I'm preparing to be disappointed because this trailer shows me very little that is looking to innovate over Portal 1 -- nor does it look to bring anything special into the fold. Sigh. But I'll still hope...

Somehow I missed this the first time round. Anyway, this is great news for PS3 owners, and Valve have eventually made the right decision to not just pretend the PS3 doesn't exist - it's got a pretty considerable fanbase, and as this generation's console war looks set to rage on much longer than previous incarnations, the extra grunt might well be something Valve can put to good use.

Trailer certainly looks like the game will be alot prettier than the first, with environments that are... y'know... different. So we should hope to see some larger variation of gameplay than was ever present in the first, which is at least a little better.

Other than that, though... yeah. Not much new.

The difference in environments seems to amount to "there's some plants and some crap is broken now"... so I can't see all too much variation as a result of that, to be honest.
