We've all got them in every walk of life - music, TV, cinema - something that everyone else you talk to raves about, telling you how awesome it is, but you just don't like for one reason or another.

I'm going to open with a biggie - Grand Theft Auto IV.

I don't know what it is, but I just don't find the game that interesting. Perhaps after playing the series from the very first one right through all the add-on packs and new cities through to number IV, the formula's just got old, but it continues to mystify me as to why the game scooped 95+ ratings on almost every platform on Metacritic. It does nothing particularly original any more, it certainly wasn't as good as their previous efforts story-wise, and a lot of the more entertaining features from San Andreas were removed in favour of 'gritty realism'... *shudder*

Since when does everyone like GTA4?

I was of the impression that it was generally a pretty popular game...

I agree that would be the one for me. GTA I have started playing it several times thinking the experience will change somehow, never does. Just do not enjoy it.

There is something about driving a Lamborghini out a second story window and running from the cops that is a lot of fun. Oh and don't forget trying to do a fly by with the chopper and aerial stunts with the motorcycle. That excitement did eventually fade so I sold the game within a month or two.

The game everyone still loves and plays is WoW and I don't get it. I played it for years but after the expansions dragged the same old game play through the dirt then I moved on. The thought of leveling characters from 1-80 is mind boggling.

Thing is, if I want to do that I'll just play San Andreas... you know, where you can actually have fun rather than being beaten in the face with seriousness, 'gritty realism' and an idiot calling you every six seconds.

I've always said that GTA4 is basically San Andreas, but with the fun torn out and replaced with Roman and a brown palette.

I do agree with you on WoW, though. My ex played it, so I played it once for a couple hours (trying both a new character and her high level one) and found myself just sitting there going "... but... this isn't fun at all..."

I've never tried WoW, and to be completely honest, I have no intention of doing so. I'm not hugely struck on MMORPGs as it is, and WoW seems to be the 'Internet Explorer' of them all - still by far the most popular, but by now anyone with any sense has moved on to something better.

I was gonna mention WoW. Waaaayyyy too many people addicted to it. It has no attraction for me.

Looking back to when I played WoW every day I can't remember any attraction to the monotonous game play. I think the obsession for me and my friends at the time was the social aspect. It was a place for us to hang out since we were all spread out across the U.S. due to jobs and military deployments. Sometimes we logged onto our characters and used voice chat to b.s. for hours while we repeatedly farmed X monster over and over for X item only to start that over the following level.

In the process I did learn an important thing about what I find interesting in a game. I need variety and customization. I'm not entirely sure I have found anything like that yet.

Does anyone here play The Sims? I tried it once and never was able to get into it. Simulating daily life doesn't work for me since games are my escape from that same life.

The Sims was next on my list. ;)

As for WoW, I agree that it most likely the social aspect that attracts a lot of players who wouldn't otherwise play games, or people who wouldn't ordinarily be interested in RPGs.

Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2. While pretty much everyone i know, loves both the games, I'm not a fan of it and I'll never be. It doesn't really offer anything special that you haven't seen in other FPS based games. Sure, you can shoot through walls and the clan scene is active (or was until MW2), but that's about it.

I have nothing positive to say about WoW, other then my youngest brother turned into a blob, after playing it every day for 2 years, until he realized how sad it was and started going out more. Today, hes one tall skinny guy, which rarely spend time gaming, other then on the xbox 360 now and then.

The Metal Gear series.
I've only played the second one (not sure about the sub-title because I believe there's more than one version), and perhaps it's not even a fair comparison, but I'd much rather play Splinter Cell. Quite frankly, it not only bored me, but I felt the humor was very cheap, and everyone I know just going on and on about it added to my dislike for it.

Same with Devil May Cry.
A friend says he's gonna let me borrow it so I can beat it and then decide if I still really dislike it.

I'll second the Call of Duty one - I've always thought it was an above average FPS that got more coverage than perhaps it warranted because it was successful on the consoles. But then again as a long-term PC gamer, I've been a little spoiled by excellent FPS games over the years.

As for Metal Gear, I've been playing them since the PSone, so I'm used to the slightly slapstick humour and the admittedly slightly convuluted plotline. For out-and-out stealth action, you're probably right - the Splinter Cell games are probably better, but there's a certain charm and balance to the MGS games - they weave between excellent dialogue, over-the-top characters, moments of tense sneaking and moments of insane chaotic action, and yet somehow it works.

What about Halo? It is not that I don't like it, but I am no where near as crazy about it as just about every 360 owner seems to be.

Halo:ODST was a waste of money for me. The campaign was short and boring. The multi-player is filled with trash talking and head shots from across the map.

The original is still the best. I doubt I'd ever tire of playing split-screen co-op on Legendary with a mate.

It's so good to know that I'm not the only person in the world who hates Metal Gear, I remember the first (and only) time I played it on PS2. A friend of mine got me so excited about it and it was an impulse buy. I can't describe the unforgettable feelings of contempt when I found out that I had to eat snakes and eggs for health, heard the sound effect of being discovered for the first time and saw the supposedly cute/funny monkeys in one of the game modes, YAK. And don't get me started about Snake, he looks like a politician on Halloween.

As a matter of fact I hate all Metal Gear games (yes, the humor is cheap,) Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, WoW and Halo. Also, CoD: MW2 is so overrated, the way Kotaku.com overhyped is just disgusting.

I also want to add Street Fighter, I hate both the characters and the game play.

However, I disagree about GTA4, for me, San Andreas was the worst.

I just remembered, after a while I called my friend who convinced me to buy it and convinced him to buy a PS2 (he wanted to buy one for a while then because of Metal Gear, which I still can't remember which one it was) and then exchanged my copy of Metal Gear with a copy of Mortal Combat (also, I don't remember which one) that he got for free when he bought his PS2.

Right now I'm trying to convince the same friend to buy an Xbox 360, this time there's no hidden agenda for me :p

I... have never played and Metal Gear games. I'll stick to Splinter Cell for my fill of awesome console stealth.

Poor Metal Gear :-( I like the original MG along with the four MG:Solid titles. Cinematic game play with an insane storyline always kept me coming back after the first MG:S.

Yeah, same here - I've always been a big fan of the Metal Gear games, although I can see why someone who has just played the odd one wouldn't get as much out of them.

I'll add Final Fantasy series to the list. Never got the hype about the turn based rpg gameplay. Bought one of the earlier releases when the PS2 was new, but like now, i was puzzled as how it could be so popular.

Jason

Ah, I'm firmly in the other camp on that one. The Final Fantasy games are the only RPGs (with the exception of anything by Bioware or recent Bethseda stuff) I have any time for.

Team Fortress 2. Funny for about a week or two, but get's to repetitive and boring.

I have to admit I did love playing the COD multiplayers but I am finding myself getting bored very quickly with it these days. It is usually the FPS I will play with friends because we all have it. However if I keep seeing one more people do that javelin glitch repeatedly in a game I am done!
Mostly the networking everyone has the game.

I agree- I feel they made it too bulky with too many gizmos and gadgets in the sequels. Probably was better for their bottomline, but in my opinion not for the actual game.
