Dead Rising is a game that really divides people. Some love the game for its more than coincidental similarity to Dawn of the Dead and the fact you can kill thousands upon thousands of zombies, others hate it for the truly mind-bending save system, irritating timer-based gameplay, and numerous glitches.
Well, there's good news and bad news. On the plus side, development duties have been farmed out to Blue Castle Games -who have built an entirely new engine for the game - rather than relying the internal Capcom build of the original. This means that not only will the number of on-screen zombies increase from a mildly worrying 500 at once to an embarrassing accident-inducing 7000 at once, it also means they'll be replacing that save system, with any luck.
The bad news is, it appears the timer is staying. Yes, I know... it's irritating you already, isn't it?
Anyway, onto the good stuff. The game is almost certainly coming out on PS3 as well as 360, and it appears there's a PC version in the works too (don't worry, I'm certain it'll be banned in Australia). There's an interesting array of very nasty and fun-sounding weapons, including a wheelchair with twin assault rifles strapped to it, a 'paddle saw', which is apparently a mop with a chainsaw strapped to either end, and the 'drill bucket', which is a bucket with three drills poked through the end. You place the bucket on the zombie's head and... well, I'm sure you know what happens next. Oh, and you can strap the paddle saw to the handles of your dirtbike (did I not mention there's a rideable dirtbike? Silly me... :D) and drive through the hordes doing some truly gratuitous damage.
Early playtests are suggesting some excellent damage modelling, too, particularly with the bladed weapons like the katana, where you can bury the sword through the target's head and straight down into the torso or chop off a variety of limbs and other essentials, or even just inflict minor flesh wounds, depending on how well you hit them.
As for the multiplayer, it's definitely going to be online, and it looks like it'll be taking the form of a series of mini-games in a TV show format. Obviously all the mini-games involve abusing the undead in one way or another, including with giant steel hamster balls (to clarify: that's the things hamsters run around in, not the testicles of a giant metal rodent), moose-antler helmets, and dirtbikes with chainsaws attached.
Whilst it's not going to rival L4D for zombie-based co-op action, it does sound like it'll be a good multiplayer game to let off some steam with a quick blast after work.
it's still TBA 2010 at the moment, but I'd expect it late Q1 to early Q2.
