View Full Version : End of Nations: MMORTS?

So, I'm so borderline on this that it isn't funny. Mostly because they bloody well wont explain exactly how it works, but hey.

Anyway, point is as such: End of Nations (http://www.endofnations.com/en/) is a new 'MMORTS' that was shown off at E3 (not that I noticed at the time), which is being developed by a bunch of guys that used to work under Westwood on the original C&C and RA games, Petroglyph Games, and some Trion folks that I've never heard of. Basically, they're claiming to be creating a persistent RTS world in which maps can have hundreds (50+ is 'just a fraction') of players simultaneously playing in their quest to kill the big bad guys (and each other, if they want), the 'Order of Nations' who are all tyrant-y and have SupCom-ish giant tanks and stuff.

However, from the vague and, thus, annoying footage so far, it seems like it will be a long way from classic RTS. Think Company of Heroes -- commander classes and the like. Now, being 24/7 persistent I'm going to assume the 'HQ' each player has is going to be off-map, meaning that it seems likely that the maps will simply have you dropping in a bunch of guys and [maybe] building some stuff and killing folk with the 'squad' you've assembled...

Eh... I want to be excited for it... I really do... and it's a great concept... but... until they show me some bloody details I'm not getting excited any time soon.

Im excited. :p
Im sure like all other gamer pals, my BFF and I were discussing our "perfect game" and came to the conclusion that it would be something like that.

Except civilian houses would be people playing a game like The Sims, and planes and choppers would be really cool flight simulators, and there would a HUGE chain of command.

This is the first step. :p It's probably going to suck.

Concept: Amazing.

My Current Excitement: Meh x 1.5

As MNDF says, the idea is very interesting indeed, but the execution is going to be very difficult. However, I loved the smaller, tighter RTS action of Company Of Heroes, and therefore would welcome gameplay in that style.

An MMORTS in CoH style would... well, it'd probably be like playing DoWII Multiplayer. Which is... eh.

Now, give me Settlers VI meets Galactic Civilisations plus FPS Battlefield-style maps with a supreme commander (hurr, pun) overlooking the whole thing in RTS format, telling players where they should go, then that'd be freakin' sweet. As is, we know very little, and what we do know is... eh.

They're also not an entirely respected or, for that matter, known dev company, so... eh.

This is like Communism; the nature of people would eff it up. That is to say that... well... since when have online gamers been up for having someone tell them what to do?

They have a whole bunch of guys that are considerably experienced in what some would call some of the best RTS games ever.

Yeah, and a bunch of Blizzard dudes were behind Hellgate: London... but that still flopped pretty hard.

Consider yourself disowned for using that phrase Konnie :p

Gimmie details and I may take a vague interest in it. But I can't really see it being more than any other MMO full of whiny misfits with inferiority complexes and potty mouths who cry like babies when you own them... repeatedly.

Anthing that ends in "MMO" for me rings alarm bells - but this may get more interest from me than any other. I do hope it works.

Hellgate London was a fantastic example of "Nice concept, bad execution", actually. A large-scale PvE MMO action game where groups of players can take on huge monsters in urban environments. Sounds pretty awesome in concept to me, it just wasn't made well enough.

Hellgate London was basically just all the ideas of the Diablo series, made futuristic and into FPS format. I'll admit, I was reasonably excited for it before it had come out, and it had some nice cinematics at the least. The whole concept of it was indeed great, 'cause it was essentially Diablo, and I <3 my Diablo. It jsut didn't do so well in practice.

So... yeah, like Communism.

And since when are Blizzard renowned for FPS games?

Westwood were/are renowned for making epic RTS games. This is an RTS game. Thus the experience actually has bearing. Now, no it isn't a guarantee, but it's a damn few points in their favour.
