Well, more like old face.. but it's in a new place (here).

Hey all-- the name's Diachron. Long time gamer, and enthusiast of too many things for my own good.

I seem to have gotten it into my head lately to stop settling for "l33t r0xx0r" boards, and look for something a bit more.. well, "mature". (That said, "roxxor" is one of my favorite pet phrases).

I'm 41, married, and recently moved from city to country. When I'm not busy running away from the 10-foot Land-That-Time-Forgot insects up here that I never knew existed, I'm usually trying to strike a balance between hobbies and chores. (Maybe the trick is to integrate them.. hmm).

But gaming is the one thing that cuts through it all. I've been doing is since I was a wee pea, and I'll do it into my grey days.

See you about!

Welcome to the forums, Diachron! Glad you found us! If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to swing me a message. I can almost completely guarantee that anyone using l33t-5p33k in a non-ironic or amusing manner will be dragged out back and left for the Aussies to feed on, so you're safe there. :p

What's your favourite game of all time?

Sanctuary! (And thanks for the welcome).

"favourite game".. as in SINGULAR? Ack.. Choosing just one seems nearly impossible.. Even a top 10 is in constant flux. If I HAD to pick one video game*, I'd say Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

* = excluding any MMORPGs

Ah, another Elder Scrolls fan? We're getting quite the collection of those here. :)

roxxor is pretty flexible: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=roxxor

Or, as I like to imagine, it could also be "Roxxor the Owl", a mythical beast that dispenses pearls of wisdom to the leet legion. ("Don't give a hoot-- just shoot!"). Maybe there's an anti-public service message series in there somewhere.

You just can't trust those Elder Scroll fans! They're all barking mad.

(I was also going to say Adventure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_%28Atari_2600%29), but they're both the same game... One just has more bells and doodads than the other.)

I suppose so. Although to extend that logic, all RPGs are essentially the same game just with varying whistles, bells and doodads.

Aye I guess that's true. If it were a cake, the ingredients would be:

Get the Thing
Stop That Guy/Gal

Directions:

You may receive multiple, interim 1 & 2 instructions, which are not to be confused with the FINAL 1 & 2 instructions.
You may occasionally be asked to either Stop the Thing or Get the Guy.
You will occasionally be asked to learned a new doodad.
You will kill many, many, many, many things before, during, and after each step.

Welcome Diachron, good to see you found us - we're a pretty easy bunch that have fun killing each other in games and such. I'm sure you'll love it here :D

I like RPGs - even when you do break it down in to that method.

But at the end of the day, aren't ALL games like that (well, maybe not Sports games)

Only in the sense of instead of step 4 being kill things, it's score many, many points.

Sports games are worse, really.

Soccer:

Stop other colour getting ball in your net.
Get ball in other colour's net.

Fighting:

Don't get hit.
Hit the other guy.

The more complexly ruled games like Cricket would take a few additional steps, but you get my point...

Also: g'day!

Haha.. Yeah, I suppose that's the deconstructionist's trap!

Something Happened.
The End.

BTW-- digging the Conker Avatar. I loved Conker's Bad Fur Day on the N64.

Why hello there Diachron! Welcome aboard. I like you already, haha. :p

I'm a huge RPG myself too and never really enjoyed any other genre as much as said one. Morrowind is definitely among my favourite RPGs of all time -- pretty much Daggerfall and Oblivion as well. Great games. I believe my last character was a High Elf. That is, if my memory serves me well.

And as a side-note, what platforms do you own?

See ye around! :)

Good to be here, thanks!

Umm.. well.. it's really more a question of which platforms I don't own. I'm just a teeny bit obsessive about collecting video game platforms so I sort of have them all (dating back to the paleolithic era).

The short answer is "yes", haha.

p.s. Yes, I love the Bethesda-style-RPG. Fallout 3 included. Oblivion broke my gaming heart with its monster rubber-band leveling, but maybe I was just cranky. I hungrily consume all genres, but RPGs are near and dear to me.

The first time I heard about something like that! Haha. Well, I guess you must be enjoying all the games you have. I don't own that many gaming platforms, as I've sold quite a few older ones some time ago. All I have so far would be a PC (well, laptop for games really. My PC can't handle those; such as World of Warcraft at 0.2 FPS back then), Xbox, X360, PS1 and the SN64. The last console I sold would be the PS2 if I remember correctly.

Aye, Bethesda did a great job at making their games. However, personally I think that Fallout 3 gets a bit repetitive after a while, but I guess that could be just me. As for Oblivion, well I did like the gameplay and general storyline. Didn't really care much about the leveling. Most important to me would be storyline, period.

I just moved upstate myself. Well semi-upstate. After 1,000 years in Queens I've migrated north to Rockland Country (Town of Ramapo).

Still getting used to wildlife encroaching around me. City rat instincts die hard..

I lived in Astoria for two years, LIC for one. I miss it, but central new york isn't all that bad. not that wild here, just a decrepit city :)
