A tough one this, as gaming has given us some truly excellent characters over the years, but who are the very best of the best?

For me, the protagonist has to be Nathan Drake (Uncharted/Uncharted 2)- one of the best-written characters I've had the pleasure of following through his adventures, with some genuinely funny wisecracks and great voice acting.

For the villain, the only sensible choice I can see is Andrew Ryan from Bioshock. What a truly fantastic villain - he genuinely never for a moment thought that what he was doing was wrong or evil, and that's why he's even more evil for it.

Protagonists:
Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango. He's very funny and believable. The voice acting is one of the best in games history, I believe.

Raziel from Soul Reaver. He's such a tragic hero (facing fate, destiny and gods) just like in real literature. Awesome voice acting, too.

Kratos from God of War. A Greek tragic hero, a god and a bad-ass all at the same time, can it get better than this?

The boy from Shadow of the Colossus. He's just a kid trying to bring his beloved's life back. His story is quit a sad one, actually.

Ezio Auditore and Altair from Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed. I'm such a sucker for the game that no matter who are the protagonists I'll love them.

The voiceless main character in Bioshock (did he have name? I can't remember.) His story is very sad too, being nothing but a tool. What really made feel such sympathy for him is realizing that I as a player controlling the character in the game was a tool, too. Cool!

Villains: I can't think of anyone right now beside Andrew Ryan from Bioshock. You're right, Jason, he was a very sick person.

Solid Snake. He has kicked ass across every continent and done so with a cigarette in his mouth most of the time. As he gets older he just pumps more nanobots into his blood to keep him rocking out like its 1987. Oh and anyone who can take down a robotic nuclear armed REX is a winner in my book.
