For the sign-up and general 'rules' thread, see here (http://www.mature-gamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2515#post2515).

This is for general discussion and banter regarding the questions/answers/contestants for those that aren't directly involved. Do you think one of the contestants is talking utter rubbish, or do you think you've got a much better answer to question three than any of those four muppets could manage? Or perhaps you just plain don't like MyNameDidntFit and want to trash-talk all his answers...

Then this is the thread you're looking for.

I'll be posting the question thread shortly, so feel free to discuss the various questions and laugh at the misfortune of the contestants who have to come up with coherent answers for them...

I think the thread should be called Dan.

I cracked up I did. :p

Edit: TP, something should be done about the amount of rep I have. A single "lul" on my part and everyone's reputation flies through the roof. >_>

Edit: I moved out Rep discussion to Offtopic. Because I can. What of it?

The questions have been set! See here (http://www.mature-gamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2613#post2613) for the game thread - discuss the questions or just generally abuse the contestants' answers in here. :p

I'm kind of lost here, I read the (MG's panel-based quiz game thread thing... GAME THREAD!) with the questions, great ones by the way, Jason ;). But where can I read the participants' answers?

Jason
12-14-2009, 01:58 AM
When they answer (no-one has yet), they'll post their answers in that thread, and you'll be able to read them there. :)

Konrad
12-14-2009, 02:04 AM
It my my understanding that we answer in the thread, it's just that no one got around to it yet. :p

Edit: Oh great, that's what I get for opening twelve tabs at once.

Jason

God bless tabbed browsing is all I'm going to say about that - I remember the dark days before Firefox, tabbed browsing and the wonders of Adblock Plus.

Damn, I misread a post and spent the last 6 hours thinking I was a contestant and writing my epic post only to realize when I was previewing it. :p

Ah well, judging from the interesting answers posted so far, it seems I had interpreted some aspects of some questions slightly differently, anyway.

Jason
12-14-2009, 11:03 AM
That's the beauty of it - the questions are deliberately as open-ended as possible to give the widest possible scope for answers. :)

Swine Flu that turns against the swine?

PRETTY F***ING SUPERNATURAL IF YOU ASK ME

Good work though, I loled.

Ah, it's taken me nearly two hours so far this morning to score all this and get it into some kind of format, but it's been worth it - everyone's got the idea... attack anyone and everything that stands between you and victory.

It brings a tear to the eye, it does...

Konrad
12-14-2009, 03:53 PM
If a contestant hypotheticaly wanted to expand upon a past answer because it was 3AM and he wanted all the duke nukem jokes so he tried to hurry, can he? Or are all posts final? Kind of like the tradeoff for a fresh girlfriend be plowed.

Jason
12-14-2009, 05:15 PM
I've already scored the ones that have been posted. :p

Thus is the trade-off between going first and waiting - you get to have all the easy gags and cheap shots for easy points, but you open yourself up to attack from other contestants.

Although I probably should have made that clear in the rules. >_>

Iggy
12-14-2009, 06:07 PM
So I get extra points for having the generosity to go first, knowing full well that I would be opening myself up for attack, right?

LOL

Haven't we had enough zombies in games already? The supernatural isn't exclusive to zombies, you know. I hate zombies and I've always hated them (unless they're Plants vs. Zombies cute!) :P

Konrad, way to go with the swine flu thing, I laughed my ass out :D (was that the right expression??)

Oh, and yes. No edits rule makes more sense, but hey - anything to win right?

Jason

Heh, I quite like 'laughed my ass out' actually. It works on a slightly disgusting level. :p

Oh, and just for clarification to the others, you might occasionally see me referred to as TP - it's an abbreviation of my handle in-game and on other forums, 'Target Practice'. :p

Because I am a man of good sportsmanship, and honour. I will absolutely under no circumstances call shenanigans on MNDF's jab. I haven't said it before and I won't say it again: Swine Flu attacking swine is not only indeed a supernatural occurrence, but the essence of irony and comedic gold.

I will get you next round, good sir.

Also: Is it ok if I close the contest thread for the sake of preservation, and let all discussion continue here?'
In fact, I would create a sub-forum dedicated to storing old GAME THREADS.

The US Center for Disease Control has done away with the term "swine flu" as it confused people. They now use the term H1N1 and will get angry if you use the old term. You would'nt like the CDC when its angry. HULK SMASH

Jason
12-16-2009, 08:33 AM
By all means post it. :p

Oh, and we can use this thread for any feedback on the process and whether you'd like it to be a regular feature or not - I've identified a couple of early hiccups (mainly we need to clarify an 'editing window', plus we need a way of tie-breaking if two people finish on equal points...).

Konnie, yeah, locking it was fine. As for the subforum idea, it's like you read my mind. Assuming opinion is enough to keep it going, I was thinking of creating a subforum for the game, rather than drowning the General Games Discussion forum in threads for it.

So, anyone (contestants or just readers) got any opinions on how it went?

EDIT: MNDF, you have +50 rep as a prize for winning.

MyNameDidntFit
12-16-2009, 01:45 PM
I think that it's basically perfect as is. An "editing window" would mean there's no bad side to posting first. Whereas, without it, the first poster trades in the opportunity to pull the piss out of other peoples' answers for the opportunity to take all the easy points (DNF, for example).

I have an idea for a tie-breaker. You'd basically just give another question, but make the question one that forces the players to choose a side. Then, to make it competitive, you give each player 2 posts that must be one in alternating order (P1,P2-P2,P1). This way, in order to get a good score, the players must not only provide a good answer, but also make the other player look like they hold the intelligence of a brick wall.

The order is as such so that each player posts both first and second, giving them equal opportunity to take each other's posts apart.

It would also work even if the question did not force the taking of sides, really.

Thoughts?

CemeteryGates
12-16-2009, 01:46 PM
Haha, well, alright then. :D

Here it is, as I originally wrote it.

Question 1:
In an interview this week, Halo developers Bungie stated that their upcoming shooter Halo: Reach was going to be "the biggest game of 2010". In a year expecting new games from the Starcraft, Final Fantasy, God of War, Mass Effect and Bioshock franchises, that's a bold claim to make.

What are some other overly bold statements you've heard in gaming, and did they deliver on their promises?

I hadn't even heard about a Halo: Reach until now. I think that series' best times are long gone. Even Halo 3 didn't seem to cause as much hype as the previous, and ODST seemed hardly different in the very brief moments I even bothered to see it. To say it'll be bigger than the new Starcraft (or any of the other titles, for that matter) seems like wishful thinking on Bungie's part to me.

I read the other day an interview with Reginald Fils-Aimé, known to some simply as Reggie and not known at all to others. He's the president and COO of Nintendo of America and he claimed that new Super Mario Bros. would out-sell any version of Modern Warfare 2 on these holidays.
That sure as hell is a bold -if not a day-dream- claim, if you ask me. :p

Apparently, the new Mario has sold 3.9 million copies. Modern Warfare 2 sold a global 4.7 million copies upon the first 24 hours of release.

The PS3 version of MW2 alone has sold over 4.43 million copies. If that wasn't bad enough for Reggie, the game's estimated sales for the 360 are over 6.73 million copies.

However, there's a poll I found interesting.
It asks, "What will be the best selling game in December?"
27% voted MW2, while 32% voted for Mario.

The fastest-selling video-game in history (beating the record set by GTA IV recently) is already seeing a steady decline in sales (probably because most people who want it have it by now), while the newest adventure of the Super Mario Bros. franchise is only increasing.

My guess is that it might be able to beat the PS3 version, but very unlikely to do the same with the 360 version. Healthy to aim high, anyway.
We'll see how it turns out.

Question 2:
Virtual racing nuts everywhere had their appetites whetted (and their summer holidays ruined) with news of a Summer 2010 release for the Western versions of Gran Turismo 5. After a host of delays and setbacks, it looks like the launch of the biggest racing game ever is getting closer.

So, panel - what games have kept you waiting just to disappoint you later on?

There's been plenty, to varying degrees of course.

Halo 2 disappointed nearly every gamer I know, myself included. To the point it made a lot of us lose interest in its sequel.

Ghost Recon 2 and the sequels that followed were also a pretty big disappointment for me, after I had spent so many hours beating the first game and its expansion packs.

Assassin's Creed. Of course I liked the game, but after a friend's cousin showed us the trailer like a year before it came out, we were all blown away. At the time it came out, I was broke and couldn't afford it, but a friend allowed me to borrow it after a while. Sure, the first 3 hours, I was having a blast. But by the last third of the game, I was forcing myself to play through it just to see the ending. The monotony was unbearable.

But the worst is the remake of one of my favorite games ever: Conker Live And Reloaded.
I was skeptical about it, hoping they wouldn't ruin it, especially the mutiplayer mode. When it came out, I waited until a friend bought it and then played it to find that my worst nightmare had become a reality. The multiplayer was completely redesigned (read: butchered) and turned into a major bore, while the 'harsh' language was completely censored... and worst of all, one of the most amusing features about the original, the Tediz, an army of button-eyed diabolic teddy bears that speak a language resembling German and bled green when shot and dismembered, were made into regular anthropomorphic bears. Pffft.

Question 3:
Hollywood's Natalie Portman was confirmed this week as playing the role of Elizabeth Bennet in the latest adaption of Jane Austen's film-spawning book. However, this one has a bit of a twist.
Zombies.
Yeah, the film is based on the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, by Seth Grahame-Smith, and in this film, the five Bennet sisters are all martial arts experts, and guaranteed to slay plenty of undead.

Share with us some classic books or films that you'd like to see given a supernatural twist - bonus points for suitably amusing titles!

Maybe The Merchant of Venice with Shylock as a zombie. The title could be "A Pound of Flesh". :D

Otherwise, Capitán Alatriste with vampires! Though that's hardly a literature classic in the anglo-parlant world.

Question 4:
It appears that the latest franchise in the once-massive Tony Hawk franchise has well and truly faceplanted, with Tony Hawk's Ride selling a paltry 114,000 copies across all formats in its first week. Seems like a long way from the days when Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 ruled the roost on the PSone.

So, Mature Gamers, name me some other gaming greats that are a mere shadow of their former selves...

The first to come to my head is the Mega Man series.
I remember playing Mega Man 7, X, X2, X3, even X4 on the PSone.
But then they had to go and make Mega Man Legends (or 64, for the N64), Battle Network, etc... and ruined it.

But for that matter, I think Nintendo's old series are nothing compared to what they were back in the day of the SNES and N64. Franchises like Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, Metroid... they're still enjoyable, but it's not the same anymore. Although some of these still seem to sell well.

Question 5:
Finally, this week details spilled that the US Army's game series aimed at recruiting gamers, America's Army, has cost US Taxpayers a not inconsiderable $33 million dollars over the past decade. Perhaps a bit disappointing considering how distinctly average the games have been.

So what represents the single worst example of value for money you've ever seen in the gaming industry?

I wonder whether this question means value for my money as a gamer or value of money from the developer's/publisher's point of view.

If the former, any game not worth replaying much and that can be beaten in less than 8 hours is a definite waste. There's not a lot, but I could certainly name a few...

As for developers/publishers, BMX XXX comes to mind. I never played the game, really, but I was told it was complete garbage. Must have been some truth to those comments, because I recall it was one of the main reasons why Acclaim Entertainment went bankrupt.

I also read recently about a controversial survival horror game likely to be cancelled, called Six Days In Fallujah, about the current Iraq war.
The game was born from the suggestion of a few US Marines who told Atomic Games, the developers, that they should make a game about their experiences in the second battle of Fallujah.
Apparently, other soldiers are of the opinion that making a video-game about such recent events would be glorifying the struggles, suffering and deaths of them and their fellow soldiers.
Because of the controversy sparked, the game's publisher, Konami, have decided to abandon the project. While trying to look for another publisher to pick up the project, Atomic Games have gone bankrupt and lost most of their staff.

From a personal viewpoint, I think it's sad that Atomic Games have taken such losses, simply for making a product that isn't seen as politically correct by the same crowd who got the game started in the first place.
To be political, even, I would argue that if soldiers don't want violence and war to be glorified, then why the hell are they in that line of work in the first place? Especially fighting a war they're in not because of passionate ideology or defending their homeland, but the agenda of certain individuals and perhaps many of them because of family tradition making a career in the military..
Also, why should historical chronology of depicted events affect the supposed "glorification of war"?
Wouldn't a game about war with an emphasis in making the player scared of combat be the opposite of glorifying war?
And again it's the video-game industry that takes all the flak. There's documentaries as well as fictional, commercial entertainment movies about the war in Iraq, but a game? Unthinkable! What heretic sorcery is that?

I don't mean to hate on the military. Hell, I participated in the military for a while.
But political correctness makes me sick, especially for all the wrong reasons...

That was kind of fun. I am surprised at how well I scored. To be honest, I am not the heavy duty gamer that you guys are. I haven't really played a lot of the games throughout gaming history, so I was at kind of a disadvantage.

Having been married with kids for a long time, I just didn't have the funds to be buying all the games that caught my eye, so my breadth of experience was kind of limited.

But, lots of good thoughts and ideas and opinions. That was a departure from the usual forum kind of discussions.

I enjoyed it.

Jason
12-16-2009, 04:13 PM
That's good to hear, Iggy - the questions are deliberately angled so that anyone with an opinion on more or less anything should be able to at least form an answer of some description - and kudos on going first! :D

MNDF, I quite like your idea for the tiebreaker. The only problem is in the unlikely event of a three-way tie. The radio show I stole (or at least heavily based) this format from has a good way of deciding the winner - it's called "defend the indefensible".

Basically, I will make a truly ludicrous statement that no right-minded person would possibly make:

(something along the lines of "I completely agree with the Australian Government's decision to ban Left 4 Dead 2, and think that it should be banned worldwide in tribute to Michael Atkinson")

...and you'd then have to defend it in as close to 50 words as you can. (obviously on the radio it's 20 seconds, but the concept is the same).

I think that way allows for a lot more freedom (and potential entertainment), but it does rip off the radio show a little more than I really wanted to.

Regards the 'editing window', I was thinking of something very short-term, just so people can correct errors etc - perhaps no more than an hour. If someone else submits before your hour is up, tough luck.

MyNameDidntFit
12-16-2009, 04:18 PM
Yeah something like that would be far easier, but it doesn't allow as much competition.

Besides... you're the incredibly biased judge: don't let there be a three way tie :p

Jason
12-16-2009, 06:28 PM
So shall I assume that from the generally positive reaction that this is something worth continuing, then?

If this is the case, there's a couple of things to decide:

a) How frequently are we going to do it?
b) Am I going to host/judge each one, or are we going to rotate those duties - if so, how?
c) Are there any changes needed?

Rob
12-16-2009, 06:50 PM
a) How frequently are we going to do it?
b) Am I going to host/judge each one, or are we going to rotate those duties - if so, how?
c) Are there any changes needed?

A) Bi-Weekly ?
B) If time allows then one judge is fine but if we do it more often then maybe you will have to offload some of the work onto staff.
C) Your examples in the questions where great and I really wanted to address those for my answers. That would be easier to tackle quickly.

Jason
12-16-2009, 07:21 PM
regards A) I agree completely - bi-weekly was what I was thinking. Bearing in mind it took me a good half an hour to mark each set of answers, you're looking at about 2 hours to mark the whole set. Plus it's frequent enough so it doesn't get forgotten, but not so often that it quickly gets old.

B) Time isn't too much of a factor - I was more thinking along the lines of allowing everyone the opportunity to play host, but if there's no real interest, I'm happy to continue hosting duties.

C) I'm not quite sure what you're getting at there (been a long day!) - how do you mean?

Konrad
12-16-2009, 07:56 PM
I absolutely think we should keep going, 'twas fun. I also like the radio show version of the tie-breaker. Defending ludicrous statements you disagree it takes a lot of skill, doing it humorously will separate the men from the boys.

As for the rest:

A) If you have the time and commitment to write and score question bi-weekly then by god you should do it. I was going to suggest it weekly, in fear of a slowly falling quality of questions and responses. But like I said, if you're up to it then I think we all are.

B) In the event of bi-weekly contests you might find yourself overwhelmed. I'd be more than happy to take up the duties from time to time, as I'm sure some of the other members would as well. It might be more interesting with multiple, or perhaps "guest" writers/judges, and keep things fresh longer. I would suggest that you take on the first couple of rounds in order to set the general tone of the contest, and start mixing things up later.

C) We should formalise the formatting. So we don't end up with a mess. For example, the way Iggy and MNDF did it was a lot neater looking than me using [quote] tags. Also whether we should restate the question in our answer e.t.c...

I'd think that the host would need to rotate at some point, else everyone will eventually pick up on, and abuse, the slight biases of the judge that I have already picked up with my super keen awareness and observation skills. C) I'm not quite sure what you're getting at there (been a long day!) - how do you mean?
Q1 example (Bungie saying Halo will be the biggest game of 2010) is strong enough on its own for us to agree/disagree and discuss. Same with Q5... it would be interesting to tackle that example on its own. A military that covers the globe and its training being pushed into the gaming environment. Death/money/power/oppression its linked to a lot.

More Natalie Portman would probably be a good idea as well. (read:sarcasm)

edit: What I was trying to say without sounding like an ass was that the examples for the questions were all so well written that I would have rather discussed them on their own. lol

Right, as the more observant of you will have noticed, we now have a dedicated forum for this.

I'm going to draw up some 'proper' rules at some point, as although I want it to stay as informal and fun as possible, it's going to need rules written down somewhere, just so the host can point at the 'host's decision is final' bit if nothing else. :p

Anyway, in order to fine-tune the system and make sure it all works, I may well break the schedule and do another test run towards the end of the week. Perhaps Friday evening - I need to think up some more questions first.

Bi-weekly was what I was thinking, too.

One issue: if you allow three days for entries, you only leave one day for people to sign up. Which isn't very long considering this is the internet and we all presumably have lives.

You already know that I'm more than willing to be a biased asshole, or rather, a judge, any time you give me the opportunity, Jassie.

That's the kind of talk I'm uh... talking about!

I should really create another signup thread If I'm going to do another one over the course of this weekend.

MyNameDidntFit

Will you be hosting this one, or would you like a volunteer?

Rob

This thread made me laugh. hard.

Jason
12-18-2009, 01:41 PM
I'll host this one just to get myself more familiar with marking questions and stuff, and I'll farm the next one out to whoever's interested.

Shotgun.

Jason
12-18-2009, 05:18 PM
Is that a threat?

MyNameDidntFit
12-18-2009, 05:19 PM
You... you do not know of shotgun? Calling 'shotgun' is, effe-... ah, screw it, yes: it's a threat.

Jason
12-18-2009, 08:05 PM
I am aware of the rules of 'shotgun', you antipodean half-wit. :p

Sorry, normally I would have considered it impossible for someone to not know but, surely you understand--after all, you're British.

Hey, Konnie, wanna go first? Or are ya scared?

MyNameDidntFit
12-24-2009, 10:33 AM
Thirteen hours, Konnie. C'mon. What've you got?

Jason

I'm looking forward to seeing his face when he realises that the deadline is tonight. :p

Konrad
12-24-2009, 07:01 PM
A christmas eve deadline? Really?

Ill get around to it eventually. -_-

Jason
12-24-2009, 08:27 PM
It was that or Christmas day. >_>

I may extend the deadline to boxing day just this once, due to extenuating circumstances and the like.

MyNameDidntFit
12-25-2009, 03:30 AM
And because Konnie is a scared little pansy >.>

nilihanth
12-25-2009, 04:55 AM
Is it me or is MNDF seeing into the future where Konrad finally posts his answers, or is MNDF totally "cocking up" his name references in his shoddy attempts at slander?

:lol::lol::lol:

MyNameDidntFit
12-25-2009, 08:08 AM
It's my way of not missing out on abusing Konnie despite him being a cowardly ponce and not posting his response before mine.

All quite deliberate.

Still waiting, Konnie, you big ol' girl.

MyNameDidntFit

Konrad appears to have missed the deadline... I guess I just scared him off by pointing out how bad his responses were before he even thought of them.

What a pansy.

*sniffs*

That... that smells like I beat the Pole. Man, he probably hasn't been beaten this badly since 1939.

You know I love you Konnie :)

If I recall correctly, it wasn't willing at all... we sent them all over there about 400 years back. ;)

Konrad
12-28-2009, 07:32 PM
IM WORKING ON IT (again) BEAR WITH ME

edit: I do think I should have been disqualified a few days ago though. If i'm not done with this shortly you should just score everything and give me -9000 points, lest this entire competition turn into fool's play. What kind of example are we setting here?

Rob
12-28-2009, 09:32 PM
Just half ass it like I did and write short answers.

Au contraire. I saw a poster that was all "BAD PEOPLE WILL BE SENT TO AUSTRALIA" and I was then all "huh, that sounds better than this *** **** **** ****** place" so I stole a loaf of bread and proceeded to beat a bobby with it until he arrested me and put me on the next boat to this Island of Win.

(you're just jealous my island is bigger than yours)

I do think I should have been disqualified a few days ago though.
I don't bloody well give a damn. I just want to see what sort of insults you Polish are capable of.

MyNameDidntFit

By being first you get to avoid this:
I'm lookin' ta see blood, blokes (and the lady, o'course *tips hat*), and if I don't yer'd better be ready to see some negative points in ya score.
... because... well... if you were spilling blood I'd be worried about your mental state.

Jason

I don't know... I did take the opportunity to stick the boot into you once or twice. :p

MyNameDidntFit
01-17-2010, 08:39 AM
Oi! You yellow-belly cowards! Get your f***ing boots on and bloody well do what you've said you'll do!

MNDF, the Mexican dude's answers range from merely naming a game for the first question to a long incoherent babble for the last and he wants to get away with it by *claiming* that he was intoxicated. The lady didn't show up at all. And if you let any English funky bears win everyone will take you for a fury-cute creatures lover, and as an Australian I assume you can't let that happen, can you?

Note: This post is in no way intended to affect our judge's decision :p

Shit.

My most sincere apologies, Jason, and also to all other participants, for missing the deadline.

At this point, it likely seems I'm just making excuses; but honestly, I wasn't able to come online until some hours ago.
The reason for that is a very unusual type of chaos in my city... long story about politics and radical groups, but in short, a large part of the city, to varying degrees, saw an unprecedented act of sabotage these last few days. The entire residential area where I live had no water, gas or electricity since Wednesday night, and until the early Saturday morning. The phone lines (and as a conesquence, internet connection), however, were still down until about 8 hours ago.

Need a host?

*rubs hands together*

Jason
02-18-2010, 04:14 PM
I'm undecided as of yet. I shall see how much time I get.

Also, I'm thinking of having some kind of 'rankings' table. However, we need to establish some kind of fair scoring system - points for a win, second and so on won't work, as obviously not everyone can take part every time (eg if we got more than four interested parties), so perhaps some method of 'average points per appearance' or something.

Thoughts?

MyNameDidntFit
02-18-2010, 04:18 PM
Points/Appearances.

Possibly, anyway. It does, however, mean that, if you do not come first in one match, you can no longer have the highest possible score... so that is a problem...

Jason
02-18-2010, 05:01 PM
I also thought of points ÷ appearances = score. However, the problem there is that it's possible for someone who only ever takes part in one game, but wins that game is potentially going to be top of the tree.
What I'd like is a system where those that perform consistently well over a longer period will rank higher than those who win two or three in quick succession at the start.

Dammit, where's a maths geek when you need one?

MyNameDidntFit
02-19-2010, 05:01 AM
Yeah the main issue for me is that, taking myself as the example (and assuming 4, 3, 2 and 1 points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively):

4 points, 4 points, 3 points / 3 appearances
= 3.67

Now, no matter how many times I win, I cannot reach a score of 4 points.

I wonder if I could contact my old math teacher, he was to mathematics as the T-800 was to killing shit... heh, but I doubt it.

Lance
02-19-2010, 01:06 PM
You could always do a ladder and set x amount of games (say ?) and ask for registrations. You don't have to play in Every game but the ladder gets updated every time a game is played and whoever is on top after everyone has reached games wins (then reset and start again)

Think a normal sports ladder like the EPL - not everyone is on the same amount of games at the same time, but they all finish on the same.

Jason
02-19-2010, 01:12 PM
The problem there is that anyone who joins midway through a 'ladder' is going to have to wait an awful long time to participate. If we carried on at our current rate of one every two weeks or so, a 10-game ladder would take at the very least 20 weeks (4 and a half months!) to complete.

Lance
02-19-2010, 01:18 PM
I thought of that as a draw back yeah

It's a bit of an awkward problem. You could always keep it the way it is now, and each winner gets a mention on the page (like you've done member of the month)... only problem with that, is everyone would get sick of seeing my name there ;)

MyNameDidntFit
02-19-2010, 01:28 PM
Good to see you've got the cocky Aussie attitude. I'd be disappointed if you didn't :p

Jason
02-19-2010, 01:28 PM
I think I may well do that. Wait until we get to 10 games, then do a 'hall of fame', with the person with the most wins going top, and their win percentage going next to it and being used to decide position when number of wins is even.

Lance
03-30-2010, 08:19 AM

From the MGPBQGT:

(tl;dr: VR systems with full interactivity = fit nerds = stereotype no longer the weak guy with glasses = profit/women)

VR is something that every gamer has thought about, seen in movies and the like and basically jizzed all over their pants... well, except for the idea of actually moving while you play a game, but you get over that quickly enough. You said ultimate, so I think ultimate. I'd personally love for an FPS VR kit that'd consist of a medium to allow for body movements to be monitored and placed into the game environment, something akin to a hamster ball (awesome on so many levels, really), in which you would make use of a series of props to represent your sidearm, primary weapon, grenades and other equipment. The visual medium would either take the form of the clichéd VR goggles or by projecting it onto the entire inner surface of the hamster ball -- giving that awesome surround experience and allowing you to actually look over your shoulder and all that. Then you add in similar technology to the aforementioned impact vests and you get yourself a bloody amazing experience.

The only real downside to this is if you're a) unfit, or, b) want to relax to play your games (discounting the downside of the pure power required as this is a fantasy). I really can't think of anything better for the gaming industry than an epic FPS simulation device.

And... hey... the gamer stereotype would get a whole damn lot hotter ;D

I thought you had a girlfriend? If you did, you should have spotted the one fatal flaw in your equation - women ≠ profit :p

I fully expect this to back fire on me next time I'm in a game ;)

I do. As for the equation, you're right, but gamers being seen as more awesome could result in other revenue streams.

Die Hard 4.0 wouldn't have needed that geek guy if gamer/nerds were stereotyped as awesome smart bad-asses -- it'd just have been Bruce Willis shooting people WHILE hacking. Awesome, huh? Thought so.

I meant in this game - I think up until then, that was due to be the first ever MGPBQGT without an Aussie present. Obviously Arch has now prevented that piece of history from happening. Although he does have quite a bit of pressure on his shoulders - I believe every single Aussie to ever take part in MGPBQGT so far has won it on his debut.

No pressure or anything.

I tl;dr'd that whole thread.

And Jason.
-1 - EVE Online runs off a single server. It averages about 40k-50k users online at peak times. Mag has servers that run with 256 people. Granted, most servers are closer to 128 or so, but it's been done.

Really? You wanna start me, son? EVE Online's server runs off an extremely powerful server. Not a PC, a server. Something that is designed from the get-go to have 32+ Gigs of RAM, 20 TB of storage and all kinds of other things that make me jelly. That server then instantiates segments of space that combine to an extremely larger whole. But through this process, it simply needs to say "There's some shit *here*, and there are some players *here*". For the average player, they only need to get the relevant information for the 'subsector' of space that they're chillin' in at the time. And for any encounter, all the data needed is "other dude is *heer*. other dude is drifting slowly forward. Other dude is firin' their lazar."

A server for a game like MAG doesn't get to have whole regions of space where nothing's happening. For each match taking place, every 100-200 players has to be accounted for, and the volume of data required for each player in an FPS is far greater than any MMO. First, character data: equipment, what model/scheme they're using, what they currently have equipped. Second, player location: their precise x, y and z coordinates. Third, orientation: Which way are they looking? again, coordinates of player camera, plus angle of elevation from the normal etc. Fourth, action: are they running, crouching, crouching and walking forward, jumping ,shooting? Any combination of those? If they are running, in what direction? Angle and orientation? IF they're shooting, where are they shooting? With every shot from that assault rifle, what is the trajectory of the bullet? Angle, orientation and divergence.

Then do that, ~30 times a second for 200 players.

Boom. Science'd.

And yes, this was an obligatory "OI, give me more points you dastardly scallywag!" post. Even though that -1 won't account for my 2 point deficit, I don't care. That's just how I roll. Now, I have to go to Uni, goddamnit.

Ah, but that was kind of my point. MAG has already done it on PS3. It runs 256-player games on a regular basis. It was pretty much the entire marketing pitch of the game.
This hypothetical PC/browser FPS will be running (presumably) on an absolute monster of a dedicated server. If MAG can manage it with 256 people and a PS3-quality game (ie a complex communications network between squads, players and commanders, as well as all kinds of shiny bells and doodads), why can't these Swedish folk do it with 1000 people and a browser-quality game?

Bottom line - you ain't getting no points, sucker. :p
