View Full Version : So, where does your username/handle come from?

Fairly simple one, this.

We all (or nearly all) use some wild, inventive and occasionally downright odd names to identify ourselves in-game and online.

What's the origin of yours? Did it just sound cool at the time, or did it evolve from a particular incident/saying?

I generally go by the nickname "Target Practice" in-game. It all stems from back when I was playing one of the earlier Quake games (I forget which), and I was getting soundly beaten. I suggested to a friend online that he must be using my many, many corpses as target practice, and it kind of stuck from there.

I have no idea how I came up with this username. It's been my handle for 9-10 years now though, so there's a lot of history behind it and I intend to keep this since usually no one else has this username :P

I normally use the nickname Metall_pingwin.

It's tale is a corny story of life-changing teenage love. >_>
I've grown tired of it recently, partly because people call me "Metall".
I've been toying with Konradical, Pingwin, Konnie but nothing seems to satisfy so whenever I can I go by my real name.

Can't remember exactly, I use to go by another name but I got tired of it and decided to go with this one because it sounds better.

Actually I first used BannanoPeel for another forum that I needed to be registered at. It's kind of sad I didn't relize that I had spelled banana (or at least the double nn part) until much later.

I was signing up to Steam Forums and I fucked something up because whatever name I was trying to use didn't fit. And I was like "huh, my name didn't fit... ooh, I like that".

And now my name is MyNameDidntFit.

When I play Left 4 Dead I tend to change my name to 'several mountain beavers' simply because it looks cool when the game tells me that several mountain beavers saved/killed/gave pills to/pounced/etc someone.

Ha I like the name too.

I saw the prefix re- somewhere and I also saw a can. So I put together recan.

And I like it adding -er at the end of words so I put it altogether. Recaner.

Though when I think about it now it sounds like someone who cans stuff repeatedly...

But I used it for a while now, so it stays.

Great topic

Brakkish - Forum and Gamer Tag
I simply liked the sound of it. I first started using it back in 2001 or so, in a game called NWN (Neverwinter Nights) I played on a multiplayer server called Bastions of War. Basically a good vs evil team type setup with 15-30 minutes rounds with scoring etc. Anyhow, I played a big ugly half-orc, and wanted an abrasive-type sounding name and had to look decent when typed (thought the double kk's looked sorta cool) and there ya have it.

Although it has been a pain over the years. From time to time I'd get the "Hey, you spelled brackish wrong."

Ah, you know I never did get to play Neverwinter Nights. I have Baldur's Gate 2 sat next to me right now - I played that game to death, but for some reason (probably system requirements!) I never got into NWN. I guess I should, but I just don't know if I can find the time to give a D&D game the attention it really needs to shine.

My name in Arabic means Knight and I'm kind of a big fan of Japanese culture so I've been using the japanese pronounciation for a couple of years now.

Gamer tag ZFormulaz XBox 360 . I am an avid snowmobiler live in Wisconsin. My sled was a 500cc engine and I had all these friends who wanted the biggest and badest sled. They tweaked the motors addes pipes etc well that little purple 500 kicked their butts across the lake everytime even with bigger engines. Needless to say the guys did not appreciate a lady schooling them a bit, but it sure made me laugh at times. I guess my approach to gaming is the same. Females take a lot of heat while gaming for just being female . Well I just smile, laugh and frag on past. I am also gracious enough to give kudos to those who frag on past me as well. I actually enjoy playing those who are faster, smarter and can teach me something.

As it should be! :D

It's interesting - either the number of female gamers is shooting up, or that those that are around (because I assume there's always been some!) are starting to pop their heads over the parapet. I've been posting on various gaming forums for the best part of 10 years now, and I honestly think that I've never seen so many 'open' girl gamers - particularly on consoles.

I think it's great, to be honest. Not only does it help shed the 'lonely male teenager' stigma that gaming still can't quite shake off, but the more diverse the gaming community, the more likely it is that everyone can find a game that isn't full of prejudicial idiots. :)

Well, my current name is a mutation of the comic character Asterix. As far as I know, he only appears in french comic books. I grew up loving him so I took his name n.n

Kudos to you for providing another nonprejudicial forum!

My user name comes from my all-time favorite song, "Cemetery Gates" by PanterA. It's also the song that inspired me to start playing guitar, which later became what I did for a living. =)

Occasionally I go by other names, mainly "Elimination" (another song title).

I have been using Nez, Thenez or Thenezzie since I first got on the net about 13 years ago. We were joking one day about how Aussies tend to change names by adding O's on the end or lenghting names.. I dared someone to come up with a variation on Narelle that wasn't Nellie and I got Nezza.. it went from there.. and has stuck.

PMS Betty B

Betty Biscuits was my old GT (dont ask where it came from, because honestly-I couldnt tell ya...) Then I joined PMS. And since xbox only allows 15 characters for a gt, I had to cut it short. I kept B because I absolutely loved how rediculously rediculous betty biscuits was.
but eyyyyy, my steam ID is still betty biscuits! :D

-I am considering changing it though :S people keep on asking me "Oh, betty boop!?" "...NO."

Being Australian, I'd have thought Nezza to be a given :p

XBL name generation probably. I've seen some weird stuff from that... like my mate's GT: CarefulShoe.

I wish xbox had a better system for name changing though. Dishing out $10 bucks to change your name is a bitch to do :S I wouldnt mind 400 msp, but 800 msp is excessive x.x (says the girl who spent $15 on her avatar....)

Nowadays, people only care about money and nothing else; they know people will spend it... eventually, whether it's much or not. I mean, I have to agree, 800 MSPoints is just a tad bit over the line. Does Microsoft know that? Yes. Do they care? No.

Anyway, my name 'Graeme' seems to be a less-common spelling of 'Graham', and presumably, also a popular Gaelic name. Don't know why I chose it; I guess I just liked it, heh.

Looking back you would think so.. but alas no it was always Nellie or Relle neither of which I like.

<<< I enjoy the survival horror genre and zombies. I tend to stay alive longer then anyone in L4D1/2 because I kick ass and because I tuck tail and run at the first hint of a zombie rush. I survive to fight another day.

It makes me sick to think of how much I money I poured into Blizzard franchises like WoW. Thank god that shit is over and done with.

Aye, true. But, then, I tend to find the easiest nickname method is just merging -zza into the name: Bazza, Dazza, Wazza, Cozza, Rozza... etc, etc :D

Hah, I remember Everquest. Never actually played it, but I guess it's got a lot to answer for, as it was pretty much the precursor to WoW, which I'm convinced will actually cause the apocalypse.

Anyhow, welcome to the forums! :)

I've gone through several nicknames on the web, the ones I remember before setting on a final were: SlimAnusOfDoom, Muffin Man of Doom, Darth Muffin until settling on Metall_pingwin which was an inside-joke-love-story up the ass.

I stuck with it the longest, but like any other internet nickname I grew to hate it. It's dumb, it doesn't make sense and people call me Metal. So now, for the sake of simplicity I just go by Konrad in most new places, or some vaiation thereof like Konnie or Konradical. If those are taken Pingwin or Pingu are generally free.

But still, I wish I had a cool one like MNDF. :[

"Nihilanth"

That guy is where I got my name from. I moved a couple letters around to make it roll off the tongue and that's it.

...It's the end-boss from Half-Life for those that don't know.

Got mine from the movie major league. It's the scene where charlie sheen throws a million crazy pitches and Bob Eucher says "JUST a bit outside". I picked this name because all of the characters from the movie were taken.
