Apparently this game looks like it's about to seriously bust some sales records over in Japan. The latest in Square Enix's misleadingly-titled RPG mega-series was released this week, and apparently Amazon Japan have had their entire stock completely drained. It also appears that importers are doing big business, with Play Asia reporting previously unheard of numbers of orders, particularly to the US.

It may be coincidence that this is the first 'true' Final Fantasy game since the rather epic FFXII on the PS2, or that this is the first Final Fantasy game to hit the Xbox, but it's difficult to argue with those figures - looks like fans on both sides of the Pacific still can't get enough of the FF series.

In related news, it appears that PS3 (and possibly PSP) owners will be getting a 'new' Final Fantasy all of their very own in the near future, with the re-release of Final Fantasy VIII on the PSN rumoured to be imminent. It means we can all remind ourselves of what a self-absorbed moody little bastard Squall was, and how in comparison Tidus isn't so bad after all.

Yeah, the PS3 is also getting the FF MMORPG that is shared with PC audiences just like the previous FF MMORPG was. I'm not going to even pretend to know the roman numeral assignments of each. I've never played any of the standard FF games. I've only played FF Tactics on the BGA and FF:CC on the gamecube. Neither of which I finished.

I've been a big fan of the series since I first played FFVII on the PSone way back in... 1997, I think? I've since downloaded it from the PS Store, and am working my way through it for a third time.

Anyway, since then I've played most of the major releases but none of the smaller ones like Tactics or Crystal Chronicles. They can be a bit hit and miss (I hated FFIX with a passion), but when they hit (VII and XII were the two best in my opinion, closely followed by X) they really are fantastic games.
