[Disclaimer:I'm about to nerd it up]

I have never watched a movie in 3D so I did not know what to expect when I went to see Avatar 3D tonight. Unfortunately I showed up right when the movie started so I got horrible seats near the bottom row. The movie made up for the seating! The story is good and managed to keep my attention for almost three hours. Both the humans and the indigenous people of Pandora do their share of giving and receiving pain during the battle. The humans have some really cool mech suits with some equally cool guns. The natives have bows but can also ride huge bird/dragon like creatures.

Without any prior knowledge of the storyline I think its pretty obvious that at least part of the story is a analogue to actions towards indigenous people throughout history. You have something we want... move or die. I was not a huge fan of the portrayal of hippie scientists against dumb marines. I know they needed that tension to build the divide between them but I just wish they would have found a more original way to paint that picture. I think characters of any interest need to be a little less black or white and more like shades of grey. With that said, the acting was good. The marine leader was pretty bad ass. When he stepped outside and unloaded his rifle and pistol at the chopper taking off while he risked dying cracked me up. My brother was a marine and those guys are pretty hard headed. The planet fighting back against the humans using animals was a little too feel good for me. I like the idea and i'm not saying its impossible but very unlikely that life would choose to cooperate on all levels. It's 2am and i'm losing track of where I was going with this lol. I want an Avatar.
Has anyone else watched or is planning to watching Avatar? If you do try and catch the 3D version. It makes an already colorful movie pop. Now that I have seen a small screen with 3D I am definitely interested in going to IMAX 3D.

I'm not sure about Avatar. Generally I've not enjoyed James Cameron's films (T:2 excepted), and this didn't look like it had anything that was going to change my mind.
On the other hand, I'm interested to see what all this 3D business is about, so might go see it for that if nothing else.

I can't say I'm really that interested in Avatar. There's all this hype and everyone's carrying on about how amazing it is... but I look it up and think "ok, so it looks pretty... what else?". Everything I've seen and heard has made me think it's basically a damn good looking girl who has herpes--looks nice but that's about all she's good for.

I've already watched it twice. Not that I think it's that good, although I did enjoy it both times.

To me, it's just another movie better seen on the cinema than on DVD in which you'll have a good time watching it, but apart from the innovation on all those hardcore effects -which like Cameron's Terminator: 2 will certainly change in technology-, it's likely not a movie which will make your top 10 or anything... just entertainment.

I like films with real people actors.

I like films with real people actors.

In the future we will have robots going to the cinemas while we can lay in our couch at home and watch it through their robotic eyes.

Pretty cool actually. And we'll never have to goto the store again, because the food will magically appear in our room.

Your missing out Konrad! :) I don't like average quality animated movies but Avatar does a excellent job of mixing real actors with animated motion capped action.

I haven't seen it, but I want to. What's so wrong with having a futuristic version of colonizing? And you have to consider that not every movie is made for pure plot. Just look at ninja and martial arts movies. When did one of those ever have an original plot? I'll have to watch it before I can say much else.

I really want to see this. It looks just perfect for me, Action, Mythical, Romance ( i'm not gay ;D ) and looks stunning. Saying that, I live in Wales where things seem to take their time to get here so I think I'm just going to wait for DVD release or download it (:

Alright, I went out and saw it this evening. I thought it was pretty good. I don't know what people could possibly be complaining about with the plot. There's just so much thought going through my head right now relating to the movie. I don't want to talk about it too much until most here have seen it.

Oh, and you can't say hippie scientists. They were not hippies, they were like all scientists. Conservation of wildlife idea came way before the hippies.

You did get that I enjoyed the movie right? :) I said hippie/dumb to help people understand the two extremes they used for the characters. Hippie is a term used more loosley in California especially for me since im from Humboldt county :)

Even so, if you review history, you'll see that there are a lot of cases where it is corporation versus science in exactly this manner.

The note that strikes a lot of people is probably all the destruction and loss of life that goes on. The note that struck me is the fact that if this premise happened in real life (however many centuries down the road), most humans would probably act the way they did in the movie. Optimists would say we have learned from racism in the past, and that would reach to all other intelligent forms of life, but I doubt it.

Was planning on seeing over the holidays if not too crowded. Not a huge fan of 3D but sound like this is worth seeing in the theater. Thanks for the review

I guess you all know it by now but it's still better be said here: steer away from the game, very disappointing.

I'm struggling to think of a movie tie-in game that wasn't very disappointing. I suppose the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game wasn't bad. Other than that...?

I watched the movie, and I really liked it ..
I even wrote a mini review about it , you can see it in here http://movies.youtips.net/blog/2009/12/avatar-2009-movie-review/

Actually, I was waiting for James Cameron next release, and it was really good.

Good point. Although wasn't that released some time after the film?

2 years after, I believe.

Have you tried to go back and play Goldeneye? It was incredible at the time but now it looks like garbage. Ah I will just remember all the good times and late nights spent memorizing the levels.

Haha, I know... Actually, if I remember correctly wasn't someone essentially remaking the game for PC using the Source engine? I'm going to have to look for that now.

That would be GoldenEye: Source (http://www.moddb.com/mods/goldeneye-source).

I've never downloaded or played it, but I've known about it for quite some time.
