Microsoft wants your Avatar to actually look like you, judging by a patent application for "Avatar Individualised by Physical Characteristics".

The aim is to eliminate the "artificiality" of Avatars in order to encourage you to do some exercise and also make it easier to tell whether the person you're speaking to looks the way they portray themselves.

The patent application says: "An Avatar generator for a virtual environment reflects a physiological characteristic of the user, injecting a degree of reality into the capabilities or appearance.

"Thereby, many of the incentives of the real world are replicated in a virtual environment.

"Physiological data that reflect a degree of health of the real person can be linked to rewards of capabilities of a gaming Avatar, an amount of time budgeted to play, or a visible indication. Thereby, people are encouraged to exercise. Physiological data that reflect the health and perhaps also mood also improve social interaction in virtual environments.

"People seeking to meet and become acquainted with particular types of people are not thwarted by the artificiality of Avatars," the patent adds.

The data can apparently be "gleaned" from a third-party health repository, a healthcare smart-card or a physiological sensor such as those for blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar levels and so on, rather than relying on whether you were prepared to spend 240 Microsoft Points on N7 armour, like Tom.

not sure whether this is a good addition or not. seems very much like a gimmick much like the wii fit

It's an interesting concept, bar one fatal flaw - those who *do* have something to hide, for example massive obesity due to hiding in their parents' basement all day abusing their mother for not bringing down pizza rolls quick enough, simply won't use the system. I doubt they will *force* anyone to use it, as that's some pretty personal data they're looking at gathering, and I don't think it'd be legal to make something like that compulsory.

I think you're right - it'd end up as no more than a gimmick.

Being an online thing, it will end up where anyone not using it is said to be an obese transsexual with eight nipples--after all, what other reason would they have to not?

And what, pray tell, is wrong with that?

What silliness. They want to make people feel bad about sitting and playing videogames? xD

Sure seems like a gimmick and a little too big brother for my liking. Do they really think an avatar will get someone to change their life style. Interesting Gee whats the motivator for Microsoft? A possible precursor to project natals probably exercise programs/ games? As a parent I am more concerned about my childrens anonymity online for their safety not what their avatar looks like. Whether we make healthy choices is my job not for Microsoft.

In any game that gave me the option to customize my character's facial features I'd always start with a crazy or funny concept but end up doing a replica of myself. I guess I feel it's kinda cool to see myself in an alternative reality doing crazy/cool/criminal stuff. Everytime I say "this time my character will be original!" My charatcers are never original, not even the costume!

Soon, with the help of Project Natal I'll be able to take that a step further and see my reflection in the water in the screen and fall in love with myself just like that greek guy Narcissus did! :p

My avatar already looks as much as myself as possible. Except, of course, for all the things I can't accurately put on my avatar. Such as my facial hair, my hair, and the kind of clothes I regularly wear.

It might have some positive effects, but as it has been said it will end up being a gimmick.
Yet if it manages to encourage a basement dweller out of its lair it is a good project, though I would wonder about the self-esteem consequences it could have.

so when people meet irl:
You look nothing like your avatar!

duhhhhhhhhhhhhh............
/facepalm.

srsly, if MS is going to do this, they might as well get rid of the rediculous attributes no one has anyway.
e.g. elven ears, razor sharp teeth, friggin dots for eyes, vampire fangs &tc

If I want to make my avatar tall and fat, then goddamnit ill make my avatar tall and fat!
