View Full Version : What does your other half think about gaming?

It's a bit of a cliche, the gaming widow(er), so let's turn the focus to our respective other halves, and what they make of our habit - do you get constant grief for your 'sad' hobby, are they quite happy to watch and do a bit of backseat driving, or do they actively get involved and play themselves?
My good lady is an occasional gamer if the right game strikes her fancy. She's a big fan of Left 4 Dead, and she also quite enjoys the Burnout games. She'll also happily sit and watch any game where there's some kind of meaningful plot to follow (at the climax of Uncharted 2, she was arguably more into it than I was... which is saying something!).
My wife takes very little to no interest in gaming. She will occasionally watch me play a game if it's cinematic enough (MG4). I can occasionally get her to try a racing game but anything more complex annoys her. Although she holds a bachelors degree and is very intelligent she can't find interest in most games. I look at it as a blessing because I don't have to share anything :)

I tend not to mix the two. My lady friend isn't a gamer, nor does she have any real interest in gaming at all, so I don't game when she's around.
The only grief I cop about it is when I forget to reply to a message because I'm playing TF2 or something >.>

Started gaming while working overnight shift for 6 months because I never saw anyone firiends or family on nights. Went back to days and it not a problem we all have " time of our own" helps us all get along better when we are together. Some adjustment to finding the time when shift switched but worked out. If I tend to get very carried away with a game, get lost, forget chores etc and forget there is a family in the house I get a little reminder. Have learned to save the games I know I will need hours of time until I have time to spare.

My Wife is almost as into gaming as I am. Currently we are both playing our own games, so when one of us is gaming the other is too. Right now it's a mix between me playing Assassin's Creed 2 or Phantasy Star Zero and she plays the new Zelda for the DS and Modern Warfare 2. Really we both play MW2 but lately she's been playing a tad more since I'm preoccupied with the other two.
She also likes watching me play cinematic games like Uncharted. Games are pretty central to our off-time here at the house. We have other hobbies as well though, like shooting guns and cooking interesting foods or desserts. My Wife also crochets and knits and even some occasional cross-stitching. Jackie of all trades :)

My wife isn't into games much, but she does love crash bandicoot 2, one stage in particular, the one where you ride the little bear. Luckily I'm a collector so I still have all my PS1 games and the console. Recently she's gotten into Feeding Frenzy. It makes good family time when my wife and two daughters come down to the basement and take turns at Feeding Frenzy but other than that, games mean nothing to her. I get a bit of stress when locked down playing a really good game or when I have to spend countless hours going through titles to feature for my TV show.

I have no other half, I'm just a whole.

Well, my other half was quite into games too. She fancied Left for Dead, Modern Warfare or even Guitar Hero. It allowed us to do more things together (:
Although, she was never quite into as much as me or fellow MGers and I often got teased about my obsession. Truthfully she didn't mind though. I did have to get off every now and then though so she didn't feel ignored >.> otherwise she'd come and start annoying me D:

Mine has just broken out the Wii for the first time in six months... to play Sonic 3. A pretty damning indictment of the Wii's games, if you ask me. Watching her flick through the 'retro' store was entertaining though...
"oh my god, they have Altered Beast!"
There was a minor tantrum when she realised there was no Road Rash, though.
Astonix my wife enjoys Rock Band. I personally got bored with the game but she likes to use the toy guitar to rock out.

That makes two of us (wholes) FlamingMetroidzd! :D
*sigh* that's just sad..
However, being a whole give me the chance of having 10-hours gaming days without any grief for "wasting" all that time (parents' nagging doesn't count, right?)
*sigh* I live with my parents..

I'm currently single, but out of the 4 girlfriends I've had over the years, two of them liked the occasional game, one disliked it, and one was even more of a gamer than I am.
The possible next one is into it. :)
She doesn't get it. But she is interested in getting a Wii for Wii-fit.

If there is another price drop on the Wii then I will probably do the same.
Maybe I'll talk her into a PS3 / sex combination instead.

Don't be silly. Not only is it a scientifically proven fact that gamers don't have sex EVER, it's also totally true that marriage is the most effective contraceptive known to man.
Honest.
Not likely to get married though, to be fair. I'm like her a bit, but not that much. :/
