So I finally bought a new computer. :D

Specs:

8GB DDR3 RAM
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Six-Core Processor @ 2.8GHz
ATI Radeon HD 6570 1GB
2.5TB HDD

A huuuge step up from my old computer! :p

But I'm having a fatal problem. I got this at Best Buy in the US, and I paid some extra bucks for the GeekSquad guys to install a secondary 1TB 7200 RPM HDD, because the original HDD was 1.5TB but only 5400 RPM. I told them I wanted the faster drive to be the master and have Windows 7 on it, so it'd load faster. They said they'd give me a Windows 7 backup disc anyway.
They didn't do jack, though. They installed the HDD I bought, but kept it as slave and didn't give me the Windows discs.
So now I want Windows on the faster drive, but I don-t have the disc to install it, and if I restore the computer to factory settings, I'm afraid I might not be able to use the fast drive, because those guys didn't give me back the installation CD it came with.

Any suggestions?

Go get the disk off them, people are generally reasonable if you ask them nicely :)

The only problem is I bought this in Las Vegas... and I live in Mexico City. :D

Well you could have mentioned that! :p

Anyway, why not give them a ring and see if they could mail it off to you?

Yeah, there's no way of changing which is your primary without an installation disk. If you have the product key, then you can download the Win7 installer (there was a discussion on that a short while back, and I believe I located a link to the download, so say the word and I'll re-find that for you), but you need to have the product key.

Other than that, though, I can help you not. To make a different drive the primary, you have to a) have an OS on it, and b) you have to make the boot table point to that OS. And you can't alter the boot sector manually. At least, there's no crazy shenanigans to get it done that I've heard of.

Grr, I payed $200 USD for that worthless service!
Guess I'll have to give them a call and hope they send me my CDs as soon as possible. I don't expect I'll get them before a week or two, though. :(

Is still better than never getting them at all

Yeah, I guess. I'm just frustrated... I was thrilled about installing my new computer. Now I gotta wait to really use it, 'cause I'll have to format it anyway.

I managed to make Windows Repair disk, but I can't seem to make it run, and none of the files on it open.

Well, I seem to have found a way to get my product key.
I'm going to see if I can get the guys from BestBuy here in Mexico to do something about it tomorrow. I did hire an annual service, after all.
But if not... I guess I might just be covered.
Now I only need to figure out how not to fuck up the slave HDD's configuration or something, after I format Windows out of the current master.

A lot of the Geek Squad guys are actually glorified sales people. I know this because a lady in my A+ class was a former best buy manager. So it might be they didn't understand. Is this a laptop? I didn't realize there were still 5400 RPM drives being made.Did you get a work order from Geek Squad? If so then you have proof of what you were told.

If you need a program to help you find a product key, try this one: www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder

I used one, but it won't let me use the product key. Not sure if it's because I still have Windows on the 5400 drive, or if the program I used wasn't helpful, but I'll give this one a try. Thanks. :)

But nah, not a laptop, it's a desktop computer.
I got a Service Order... not sure if that's what you meant or it's something else.
By now, Windows in this drive is being a bitch, displaying messages saying my copy of Windows isn't valid and I may be a victim of counterfeit in 15-minute intervals, minimizing my games every now and then...
