We've all got our own preferences, but what kind of games are generally most likely to get your attention? Are you a slow-burning RTS buff, or do you prefer the instant gratification of a frenetic arena-based FPS?
Personally I've always had a soft spot for FPS games - the original Quake was one of the first games I ever played online, and it'll always be one of my favourites. I prefer arena-based blast-fests, as I don't have the uber-l33t skillz I used to have twelve years ago, and as a result, games like Counter-Strike are just too much for me. Give me a rocket launcher any day . :D

I'm a platformer guy in tradition, but I play a lot of Rock Band 2 and some Madden from time to time.

I have to say, I've not followed platform games so much of late - obviously Nintendo are keeping the genre alive with the excellent Super Mario games, but apart from that, are there many good ones out there any more? I remember on the PSone, there were still loads - Spyro, Croc, Crash Bandicoot, but since the last generation things have kind of died out a little.
Has the genre died, or has it just evolved?

NSMB Wii looks pretty decent. However, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is gonna be amazing.

Yeah, the Mario series is always going to be strong - is there much else out there apart from that though?

Not really. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games recently came out, it wasn't that bad, but it's pretty buggy. I can't get past the fifth level cause when I enter it, it freezes.

I like FPS, and some RPG's. That's about it.

Did you play Borderlands yet? If you like FPS games and RPGs, you'll love Borderlands.
I play FPS coop games only. I don't have the patience for most of the other types of games.

Most first person shooters bore me, especially those in the single player along the lines of Quake, Doom e.t.c.... I need considerably more variation in my gameplay to keep busy and even then it rarely works out. Of the FPS games that came out "somewhat" recently I finished Crysis. I tried multiple including Far Cry 2 but I just never got interested. Ever since I stopped buying them I don't really know what's on the market currently.
I mainly play online shooters, casually. I used to be into the entire clan and team scene until it occurred to me that I was sometimes actually avoiding my clan mates so I don't have to play. I quit promptly.
I also love my RPGs, though I don't play them often. I own four games that i've beaten to death with a stick, and then again. I've played the original two Fallout games tens of times, and both Knights of The Old Republic games. It seems to me that they're never going get old. :p

To be fair though, Far Cry 2 was, at its core, a deeply flawed game. It stunned me that it got such good reviews.
I think to be honest, the single-player 'campaign' FPS is on the way out. They're becoming too samey and generic. I think co-op/multiplayer FPS games are the way forward now - I can see them being truly huge in a few years' time.

Perhaps. I enjoyed Far Cry immensely, but the second version in all it's hype and glory left much to be desired.
But yes, Single Player campaign FPS games will probably keep dying until we get some fancy new method of rendering them, or controlling them. That's where the "cinematic" experience will rise again.
As a wild example, I'm sure many people would literally kill to play Far Cry 2, for all of it's mediocrity if it were offered in some futuristic virtual reality helmet.

Quite possibly. There was no denying it was a beauiful game (I have it on PC, and I actually have a spare, unopened copy for the PS3 I'm planning on giving away here at some point), but the issues with continually respawning guard posts, the x-ray vision of the AI, and the repetitive 'drive for ten minutes, get out, shoot something, drive back' really didn't do it for me.
Heh, I'm really selling this for the lucky beggar that wins it, aren't I? :p

I enjoy many different types of games, mostly online multiplayer games. RTS, FPS, MMOs and RPGs. Haven't really gotten into sports games yet, but will probably try out NFL games

The only games I play nowadays are FPS.
I do play Pro Evolution Soccer more than any other game, but that's the only sport game I've ever really played.

First Person Shooter's are my first pick when it comes to various game genres. I dunno, it's just the 'rush' one get from killing 3-5 guys in a row and the satisfaction from hearing the whine afterwards.

Ever since I pushed that cart into the anti-mass spectrometer in Half-Life for the first time when I was six (the year it was released, of course) I've been an FPS man through and through.
I play the occasional RTS or RPG when I get the urge for something different, but not very often compared to how much FPS I play.

You were playing Half-Life at age 6? Jeeeesus. You'd have had to have surgically removed me from behind the couch to get me playing that game at 6. :-/

I never played Doom 3 more then 10 minutes into the game and that was in my mid 20's :D
Movies do not scare me, but scary game do for some reason.

You know a year ago I would say Action/Adventure because I am a Tomb Raider fan at heart but after watching my son playing COD: WAW got me into playing and enjoying that kind of genre which I never thought I would have liked to be honest. So it's between those 2 types of genre.
