There is usually a central theme:
You start out as a coming of age child in a small town, you live with your mother. You have a close friend/enemy who keeps you motivated. You have a wise pokemon expert in town who gives you your first pokemon - then you set off on your own adventure with two goals:
Complete Pokedex and Become Champion.
Sometime during the trip from one GYM to the next, things begin to run afoul and you meet a group of evildoers who want to use pokemon to accomplish some evil deed. You (for the most part) singlehandedly stop them. In the process you visit a bunch of different places and encounter a bunch of new pokemon, as well as train the ones you have. Usually in order to progress further from location to location you first need an HM which you 1) need to find, 2) need to earn a gym badge from your nearby GYM to use. By the time the evildoer plotline ends, you realise you've trekked across the continent, defeated most of the GYM leaders, have beefy pokemon and are almost ready to take on the Pokemon League. You take care of whatever business is unfinished or comes up on your way to the Pokemon League and tackle it. You win, your rival is humiliated/happy for you - story ends.

Went back to yggdra union wondering where I left it, loaded it up and found my army surrounded with a force six times my size, multiple cannons and other artillery. 3 hours later, I somehow managed to win. Especially good since a loss of any unit will send you back to the mission start, there are no checkpoints in the game.

For the exact same reason you couldn't play. No sense trying to play a game that cannot even start.
Anyway, playing Yggdra Union and The Third Birthday. I am LOVING The Third Birthday, especially how the overdive system works. Basically, Aya's soul is sent back in time to pivotal moments in the war with Babel. What she is doing is taking over soldiers' bodies in order to try and win these crucial battles. How this works in gameplay is that you can jump between soldier and soldier, flanking the Babel as you see fit. If you die, fine just dive into a living soldier; a game over only occurs if the soldiers lose everyone and Aya's soul is destroyed within the dying body. Its like a lives system, except your lives fight alongside you in combat.

I was on one of the early levels in a darkened room and there was a guard on the other side of the door so I cast an ice spell on the floor and jumped around to make some noise. The guard came to investigate, slipped over on the ice, and was promptly despatched with minimal effort.
I got the jumping power attack though and discovered the phsyics are a little buggy. I used it on an enemy in a corridor and he bounced off the floor and hit the roof, I haven't even taken the strength perk yet!

Hmmm. Sounds intriguing. I'll have to check this game out.
As for me, my good lady (rather inadvisably, I might add) got me Deus Ex: Human Revolution a week early. As a result, I've got absolutely NO packing done this week, and what's more, I don't care. :p
As for the game itself, after a bit of a slow start, it's really starting to feel like a Deus Ex game - the emphasis on Stealth is a little heavier than its predecessors, but I have no doubt that should you want to play it like Rambo, you could quite happily do so - the highlight for me so far was slipping into a room undetected and after a little scouting around, I was just shifting a vending machine to expose a hidden air vent, and heard the door whoosh open behind me. The 'alerted' message came up on my radar, and I panicked and... well, kind of threw the vending machine at the guard's face a bit. >_>
Plus side: problem solved, no alarm triggered.
Minus side: there goes my 'no kills' attempt. That guy was VERY dead.
I'm on Deus Ex: HR too. Loving it. That and some retro Star Wars Supremacy action with a smattering of Age of Conan when the need to eviscerate hits.

Its a case of both good and bad voice actors. Jenkins and Haas in particular stood out as very good performances, but Sarif and Josie are just ugh.... I suppose the bad voices are more noticeable when you do have great performances in the same game.

I've recently finished playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution (first play-through). Here's my little spoiler-free review I posted at another forum.
Going to keep this short and spoiler-free.
I've completed the game a few days ago. It was a good experience, certainly one of the better games I've ever played. In-fact, I don't think the game needed much improvement at all, except for probably the first 'boss' encounter and the inventory system.
The inventory system was good itself, but even with the augments, I found there was way too little space for all the items the games offered. Hell, I even had to choose to neglect the Laser Rifle I found, simply because I couldn't carry more, nor could I afford to drop anything else at the time. They should have at least made the bonuses of the augments slightly more beneficial inventory-wise.
The basic fight mechanics were amazingly well-done from my perspective; this includes the AI. Unlike many other stealth-based games I've played, I found that the AI did react appropriately (in most scenarios), and in-fact, had some issues trying to get past certain enemies. The only thing that was a bit less was the way the AI handled the searches if you vanish from their sight. They should have explored farther than they did. Of course, this only counts for the humanoids, more-so than the mechanical enemies.
The story itself was great, no complaints at all. Seems >Omen< already found something in regards to the DLC, so I guess that'll be the only thing left unfinished that I wondered about.
The graphics aren't precisely top-notch, but in all and fair honesty, I don't really care. I'm more into the story and game-play than anything else. There are countless great games out there, despite their graphic quality.
All in all, I think DE:HR was well-worth the wait, and a great general experience - not to mention it has good replay value too. I'll give it a second play-though any time soon. Not just to experience the story's end from a different perspective, but also to complete any achievements I might have missed the first time around.

I like the lack of space in the inventory. I only have one level of the inventory upgrade and I can carry everything I need: tranq. rifle, 10mm, stun gun, revolver, heavy rifle, P.E.P.S., 1x EMP grenade, 1x gas grenade, ammo, energy bars and viruses. (I think. I can't remember if I dropped the revolver or not)
It's a beautiful amount of space. It's not so little that you can't outfit yourself effectively and not so much that you end up with too much equipment--I've actually found myself nearly out options with equipment at one point so far (though, to be fair, that's because I didn't realise my heavily modified pistol would kill a large robot in one clip whereas my heavy rifle couldn't do it with two and a half -_-).
Jason
09-09-2011, 10:48 PM
I'm at what I'd estimate is roughly halfway through the game, and so far it's been thoroughly enjoyable. I decided to go for a 'no kills' run early on to make things interesting, and whilst it's made the majority of the gameplay considerably more interesting (being spotted is now a major, major pain in the backside, and getting through some of the more populated sections of the game has required some considerable thought, not to mention several retries), I do keep looking rather longingly at the ridiculously upgraded 10mm pistol I have sitting in my inventory for 'emergencies' and am itching to see how the decent 'guard' AI stacks up in a firefight.
As for the inventory debate, I err on the side of it being a good thing. I love the way it automatically juggles items round to fill all available space in order to save you the puzzle of doing it yourself, and I found that the space (or lack thereof) forces you to choose how you're going to approach a mission in advance and stick to it (at least until you can get your hands on replacements) rather than walking in fully prepared for every eventuality like some kind of Swiss Army Knife with a gravelly voice and poncy coat.
My main bugbear so far has been the apparent imbalance of Augmentations. There are certain Augs that I've seen no need for at all (the rebreather one being the most obvious), whereas others are damn near essential but not always a logical choice.
To illustrate that last point, I'm obviously going for a stealthy/hacker build as I'm not allowed to murder anyone, so the 'enhance your strength so you can lift heavier objects' Aug wasn't something I was planning on getting, as I had no plans to get into a situation where throwing a vending machine at someone's face would be the optimum solution. It was only later that I realised that in the future, we will use vending machines primarily to conceal man-bot sized ventilation shafts, and having the strength to move said machines will make my efforts to move around undetected considerably more fruitful.
Don't get me wrong though- I'm loving the game so far, and I have no reason not to believe that I'll continue to love it whenever I find time to pick it back up again.

If you have an upgraded 10mm... any and all firefights are a breeze. If you have the Typhoon... any and all firefights (boss fights included) are a slight stirring of the air.
I will agree that there are a lot of useless upgrades--Stealth Enhancer, silent run/walk/sprint, optics, etc...
As a stealth Jensen, though, there are a couple of things you wouldn't expect to want: the TYPHOON (I cannot stress this enough; without it boss fights are a pain in the arse), heavy lifting, punch through walls, EMP shielding and rebreather. EMP shielding as it also allows you to walk on electrified surfaces gaining you easy access to certain areas, punch through walls as it lets you get to many stealthy passages, rebreather because there are at least a handful of areas in the game where a stealthy entrance is blocked by a cloud of noxious gas and the lifting because of the aforementioned vent covering.
All this is to say that I've finished the game once and loved the hell out of it. I'll be starting it again within a week or two, I think, as there are just so many choices and decisions that could make all the difference in the world.
Konrad
09-10-2011, 09:14 AM
I finished this game yesterday with a stealth/hacker character. I didn't have a no-kill policy, I wouldn't dream of denying myself the occasional bullet to the head, and there were a few extremely tempting opportunities.
My next playthrough, I'm going to make a point of being last man standing on every map. Allies, enemies, civilians, hostages - they're all going down. I downloaded the "burger menu" mod and started up a new game on the hard difficulty immediately, homicide-ing around with all augs and infinite energy but... It just wasn't very fun.
I should probably take a break from the game for now and try later. But I would like to put a twist on the gameplay. I thought infinite energy would be a cool way to do it, considering how big a fan I was of stabbing people with my elbows, but it just breaks things way too much.
As for the issue of picking the right augs, I found a neat little system for it early on:
Always have 1-2 Praxis points available. When I started out the game, the second I leveled up I put my points in something that sounded nice. Eventually though after being unable to use a fancy rooftop entrance to a building due to missing landing gear. I figured that it makes a lot more sense to get Augs on a need basis.
"Found a room that looks useful but will scratch your lungs out?"
Rebreather!

I ended up basically doing that in the second half of the game accidentally. I was just too into the game itself to actually register that I had points. At one point I think I had 6 spare.

Oh yeah, I was going to mention that but I was all on the bus and everything. The 40k universe is also completely unfamiliar to me, my only previous experience being Dawn of War II, which after starting two summers ago, (and getting raped and lagged to death in MP) I never came back to.
Anyway, my point being, if this was a Star Wars game, bah, the first TPS Star Wars game, I'd be all over it like it's nobody's business. But it's a 40k game, and I realize it's mostly fan-service that goes over my head.
MyNameDidntFit

It's not that the game caters directly at those familiar with the 40k universe, it's just that when you do know the universe you can really appreciate how well they've managed to represent that universe in-game.
Still, I wish they'd have chosen a damn chapter that wasn't the pussy-footed Ultramarines... but I suppose if it were to be Relic's pet Blood Ravens then the entire game would have been filled with the kleptomaniacal adventures of a squad of Space Marines looting the forge-world worse than the Orks were.

I moved to PC since I lost my ps3 due to my money hungry mother =/ but luckily my roommate and friend James has a PS3 that I have full access to. Maybe if I have some cash soon I'll try to see if I can find it

I'm mired deep in an unhealthy TF2 addiction right now. I've also been working through Saint's Row III in my spare time, as well as slowly figuring out Terraria again.
Plus I'm trying to remember how the hell you play Frozen Synapse again so that I can play Konrad and not die horribly.

STALKER: Call of Pripyat, m'self.
Engine's still buggy to buggery, but my word is that a good game. Ain't much else around that captures the atmosphere--that, at any and every given moment, you are at the mercy of the Zone, and it is a battle for survival more than anything--so spectacularly. So yeah, i'm quite enjoying it.

Holy crap thank you, that'll be super helpful. I can usually get to the undead core, but I'm always so low on health that I don't last too long. Luckily Misery spawns creatures that will drop health too, or else I wouldn't have been doing as well as I was.
But you mean there's more after this? I was assuming this was the final string of bosses, that maybe after the Undead Core, that was it. Damn.

there is...if you've satisfied all the requirements. defeating the Undead Core only gets you the normal ending. if you want to face the Sacred Grounds (aka Hell) and obtain the TRUE ending, there's specific things you have to do throughout the game.
1. get the Booster v2.0 (skip the Booster v0.8)
2. get the tow cable
3. save Curly after the Core boss fight
4. drain Curly in the Waterway Cabin and take her with you
5. get the Iron Bond from Curly after you restore her memory

Thanks to a number of things all too uninteresting to mention, I've hardly had time to play any games recently. I literally haven't signed into Xbox Live in over a month. However, I did find some time in the past week or so to get a bit of UFC Undisputed 3 on the PS3 in. Very impressed, to be honest. Irritating loading times, but the game itself is excellent.

A few titles when I get the time, Syndicate is being favoured at the moment, if anyone has it lemme know because the co-op is a lot of fun but quite challenging and can only be better with a full team (only played as a duo so far).
Kingdom of Amalur has impressed me quite a bit aswell but I'm not keen to get stuck into another RPG at the moment because it will eat my life.
Skyrim is still seeing the inside of my xbox on occasion and I'm planning a big long questing session to finish off the main quest lines soon.
Other than that I've also picked up some bargains, the entire gears series for one which my mate and I are planning on co-oping all the way through.

I finally got my hands on DotA2 the other day, so I'm slowly exploring the clusterfuck that is understanding that game. When I need something faster, I jump into Tribes: Ascend.

Mass Effect 3.
So far my impressions are decidedly positive. From my experience so far the dialogue is essentially the same as ME2 and the combat is... infinitely better, other than the occasional grip with the cover system that comes from having to look just the right way to run forwards out of cover rather than switching to another piece when there are multiple pieces nearby.
I really only have one gripe and that's not even really the game's fault: there seems to be a gremlin fucking about in my savegame because certain flags have been set the wrong way (I killed Wrex, Wrex was dead in ME2 and now... he's alive and well). There was even one instance that saw a direct contradiction: Shepard said the right thing--that I killed the Rachni Queen--and then a bit later Garus mentions how we let that Rachni Queen live... head... hurts...
Anyway. Solid game. Markedly improved gameplay in so many ways with a lot of the old annoyances removed and a lot of other improvements. Level design has taken a step up, especially with the Citadel. Oh man, the Citadel has improved so, so, so very much. I almost LIKE IT THERE NOW--anyone who played either of the previous games will know how big a step that is.
... er, this was meant to be a two-or-three line post... so, yeah, off to eat and then play more ME3.

When Shepard opened her eyes, she was still hurdling towards certain doom. Her entire life just flashed by... and then some. The things that should have been, the things she could have known. She could have stopped the reapers, fixed the Geth. She could have learned the Prothean secrets but most importantly perhaps... She never touched Garrus. All those things were possible, but now...
Behind Shepard, the burning Normandy let out her final wheeze. A thundering cough, and went flying in every which direction in no particular arrangement.
Mass Effect 2 and 3 are a dream. That's why your shit is going weird with Wrex.
Maybe I'm onto something? Maybe that's the crappy ending everyone cries about but I passionately avoid reading about?

MW4's fucking Mech Lab. Basically in the campaign, you deploy on a mission with your lance (squad). If you manage to take down enemy mechs without destroying them completely, Castle does a salvage run that picks up and weapons, mechs and equipment left behind by the enemy. Of course enemy mechs tend to be highly damaged, but after a few repairs you get given them basically free of charge. Any salvaged mechs have no weapons mounted. So you go to the mechlab to perform repairs, mount weapons, adjust equipment and armor, paint and name your mechs...It all gets quite addicting. Especially when the total value of the mechs salvaged in my latest mission (after repair, and deployment costs) was equal to roughly 20x my actual physical cash pile...they are worth keeping and tuning up to perfection.

On a more serious note, ME3 left me utterly bloody shocked with a choice I honestly struggled to make. I'm loving this game so very much.

Just finished ME3 and [no spoilers here, don't worry] I have mixed feelings about the ending: on one level I really enjoyed it, but at the same time I felt it didn't do the rest of the series justice--it appears to simply suffer for the quality of the preceding content: it's really good, but what came before it was simply too good to let it shine... no complaints from me.
Anyway, ME3 has been the highlight of gaming in the last... I don't know... really long time for me. Gameplay that is immensely rewarding, fun and diverse, a plot-line that has a dozen moments more awesome than the climax of most stories while still retaining flawless pacing, massive scope and personality. Really, all I can say is that ME3 now sits firmly in my "favourite games of all time" category.
Loved it.

I just dropped a few months' worth of savings on a Nintendo 3DS. Thus, I am right now catching up on old but new to me happenings in the Pokemon world with Pokemon SoulSilver.
Also Super Mario 3D World which is just a ridiculous amount of fun. I was a skeptic when the system released, but this game convinced me that platforming with 3D is far from just a gimmick.
On that note, I know several of you here also own a 3DS, so we should exchange friend codes and stuff.
