SPOILER ALERT (If you couldn't tell by the title)

* The console will carry a Blu-Ray, the primary function is to discourage piracy.
* It must therefore bear display 720P and 1080P, both for broadcasting video Blu-Ray for games.
* A release date for 2010 is planned.
* The output will be worldwide, orchestrated the same day in all countries.
* A bid to take over your Wii first generation is planned. (All your bases are belong to us?)

Sounds good so far but I think we need to see how far Sony and Microsoft is taking their next console to. We all know the Wii was outdated when it was released...will it be this time?

A 2010 release date is interesting... I don't think Sony or Microsoft will put out a new console until 2011 at the earliest, so there's potential to do a bit of catch-up. However, Nintendo tried this before with the N64 and it only met moderate success, despite being technologically superior to its competition, mainly because it was trying to compete with two very well established userbases.

It's certainly news to me though - good catch!

Wasn't Blu-Ray Sony's? I also heard thee was gonna be a bigflash drive storage or a hard disk to go along with it.

I hope this rumor is true. It makes sense that if Nintendo does release something to replace the Wii then it will be in incremental steps much like their upgrade path for the DS to DSi. Small additions instead of major revisions like most previous major console releases of the past.

I don't think I would get the next Wii unless there is a massive UI update that brings the Wii2 into high def along with an upgrade to the cpu/graphics, but then we are getting to far from small upgrades and it would fragment their already hugely profitable userbase. Unless they make it fully backwards compatible! Oh no, I better start saving now.

Wow- 2010, that is really early. It will be interesting to see if this move works out in their favor (unless of course it is delayed, which is always possible.) I really hope they come up to the times with the technology though- motion was cool, but they definitely lacked in the visual department, so hopefully this time they can move forward in both areas.

Agreed - the Wii has been a big hit for Nintendo, and hopefully restored some major financial muscle to them, which with any luck they'll invest in developing a worthwhile console with their next outing.

I think what the Wii needs more than anything is some decent games, though. If the Mario and Zelda franchises disappeared tomorrow, Nintendo would only have about five worthwhile games on the Wii.

Eh, Wii2.

I fell for the first one (or rather, mah pops did) and it turned out to be a waste. It was a blast at first, but once the novelty wore off, the only time anyone touches the thing is when Guitar Hero suffers a shortlived rebirth every few months. And that could be played on any machine. Even random folk during parties don't huddle around our Wii anymore.

Still, I do wonder whatever they should do with it next.
