Thoughts? Eager for it? not so much?
Im playing through the first one now (mainly because the second one is coming out fairly soonish.) and I want to get it. But good GOD the first one is straight up, shit your pants scary. Ive never been scared by a game or movie to the point where I start screaming or couldnt play-but OMG, I got so scared playing it the other day I laughed, screamed, laughed, screamed some more, and started crying.
The second from the series has been said to be "GOOD" & better than the first (generally since they are fixing the problems). I also read [in gameinformer] that the developers noted that one of the major problems of the first game was that it was too scary (REALLY?) lol. They were going to fix it by making it not as shit you pants scary (i.e. unplayable-My friend who worked at gamestop was telling me about grown men who had to return the game because it was too scary)
I DO fairly enjoy the first one so far, aside from the fact that you have to conserve everything and I can only play for about 20 mintes before getting to scared.
Im still iffy on if I will actually buy it when it comes out-but I still have yet to finish the first one ^.^

I'm going to have to pick the first one up, I think. I've seen it dirt cheap in several stores, and it's been ages since I played a decent survival horror game. My good lady quite likes her horror films, so I imagine she'll enjoy this too.
I just recently got myself a kickass pair of 5.1 surround sound headphones, so I imagine this is going to be causing me to leap several feet out of my chair on more than one occasion.

I own the game and it's sitting on my shelf right now. I was never one for survival horror games, but I figured since it was getting such great reviews I'd give it a shot.
It was entertaining for a little bit. It was different than anything I had ever played and it was indeed pretty damn scary. But eventually once the "novelty" wore off, so did the enjoyment. Once I figured out pretty much exactly when and where I can expect new monsters to pop up, the game went striking fear in my veins, to me dreading the next time some THING pops up in front of my face. It wasn't fear, it was surprise, and it was a pain in the ass. Maybe I'm not one for survival horror games... But I like scary as long as it's built up through atmosphere and storyline, not things popping up all the time which is essentially what that game was. Nerve wracking, yes... Enjoyable? No.

I've played Dead Space some time ago, completed it. But I can't say it really scared me. Sure, the atmosphere was fantastic and the characters/storyline was excellent - that goes without a doubt. I will most likely get Dead Space 2 once it's been released.

Thats exactly what theyre going to 'fix'. The fact that things popping out was the main, and probably only, reason why people got so scurrrred.
Those friggin baby alien things scare the shit out of me though. regardless of whether it comes out of no where or I see it coming.

I've never found any game that scared me beyond the bloody-annoying-after-ten-minutes sort of thing that Konnie mentioned. Games that have made me feel suspense? Sure. But scared? No.
I think we've a long way to go for game technology before we can actually be scared. Mostly because, to be scared, I'd think you'd have to be fully immersed.

Picked this up, and had a great laugh at my girlfriend shouting out and screaming every time something jumped up.
Unfortunately, I think I've played too many survival horror games, as I knew almost exactly when and where to expect the 'surprises', and as such very few of them genuinely caught me out. One or two did, but for the most part, I was ready for them.
All in all though, I'm only at the start of chapter 2, and it looks like being a very enjoyable game, and certainly a lot closer to genuine survival horror than RE5 ever was. Not that RE5 was a bad game as such, it just wasn't scary.

Just for those that aren't aware - the second game will also follow Isaac, although this time instead of arriving after the event, you'll arrive on The Sprawl - a huge city mounted on the Rings of Saturn (no, I don't know how either).
There are new enemies this time too, including clawed children and three-legged monsters.
Oh, and a multiplayer mode.

This may well be the first time a game has actively challenged my ability to suspend disbelief this far before it's launched.
"But... but they're ice and dust and stuff, aren't they?"

And... THEY ALL MOVE SEPARATELY. AND ORBIT IS RELATIVE. AND WHAT.

Even if it was just a floating space-station... Sticking a city in the middle of a fast moving ice/rock shitstorm sounds like a bad idea in principle.

Bad news for PC fans of the game. Unless EA have dropped a whoopsie with their latest fiscal release (http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=443622), it doesn't look like Dead Space 2 is going to be coming to PC. The PC version was conspicuously absent from the list, which featured console versions plus a handheld version.

I really liked Dead Space, played through it a few times now. I think that it's the kind of survival horror game that RE 5 wished it could have been. It's not just about being scared, it's about getting out alive... which I always dig. I love Event Horizon and Aliens, so this is totally my schtick. Pandorum was a pretty good one too. Anyways, I'm very excited about playing the new game. didn't play the rail shooter for the Wii yet, but it doesn't sound like that was anything to write home about. I love the ambient tones and sounds of the ship itself. That is what makes it scary to me, that you can hear them moving around all the time... creepy!

Still not an awful lot of news on this one, other than the multiplayer "will allow you to dismember your friends" according to Producer Steve Papoutsis.
He's also mentioned that the game will still be just as gruesome and scary as the first one, just with occasional action sequences where Isaac will have the upper hand for once. Whether this serves to provide occasional breaks in the unrelenting tension for the player to blow off some steam and indiscriminately waste some baddies, or makes the Necromorphs less fearsome due to the fact you're facing so many of them (which is what I'm worried about) is up for debate.
Also, in news that will no doubt calm mine, MNDF's and Konnie's collective nerdrages, the game will now be set on Titan, which as I'm sure we all know(;)) is a moon of Saturn, rather than in the rings itself. It's not clear whether this has been actively changed by the developers, or whether it was sloppy journalism in the first place.

I really love the zero G sequences in the first one, as well as the time you spend outside in the vacuum. You can't hear those bastards creeping up on you! I just really dig this game and am so pumped for the second one. Dead Space was the kind of story I wanted to play through, but NEVER have to experience in real life :). I'm gonna stick with my DVD's and leave the getting ripped apart by monsters to the experts!
Also, not sure if anyone tried to do a second play through, you get new suits which make Isaac more powerful. It makes it a faster play, and more of a slaughterhouse. It's still pretty fun when you are all jacked up. I have played through it three times now :)

I've still got to play through the first one - I'm only just at the start of chapter 2 - unfortunately it kind of got overtaken by all the AAA titles that dropped in the past 2-3 months, so kind of fell back on the list somewhat. I'm definitely planning on getting through it though.

It doesn't help that most people have become desensitized to violence. I try to get into horror games by turning off the lights and turning up the sound. Even after getting set up I still shrug my shoulders at a mutated baby trying to rip my characters face off. Some time around Resident Evil 2 I stopped being able to scare myself with a good horror game. I have a hard time getting immersed in them anymore. Somehow movies still scare the crap out of me :)

I wish they would let you jump on any surface. The dead spots where you can't go are kind of annoying. I want to explore all the little nooks in the zeroG rooms.

I saw Dead Space on XBL for $19.99usd and couldn't resist. I started chapter 3 last week and during my next day off I'm going to try and get a few more chapters in. Fun so far.
Even though I'm still playing through the first game I think I will put Dead Space 2 on my "buy" list. The developers do such a good job of keeping you in the game instead of "out" in menus. That's probably my favorite feature of the game and it makes so much sense for a horror game to keep you right there. It's too bad that the monsters get a little bit predictable so early on like you guys mentioned. It would be nice to have more tension with wandering monsters at random spawn points.
