View Full Version : What was your first computer/console you regularly played games on?

For me it was the Amstrad CPC 464 - kicking around at the same time as the Amiga and Commodore 64, it ran most of its games from a cassette deck built into the keyboard. There were two choices of monitor - 'full' 16 colour, or the classic green/black number.
There were some classic games on that thing, in particular Rockstar Ate My Hamster, a 'band manager' sim with a truly warped sense of humour and a surprising level of depth. Ah, what I'd give to see an up-to-date version of that.

I had had goes at the Atari and Commodore first at friends places, but my first regular console was the original 8bit Nintendo - and I remember getting 3 games with it - Super Mario Bros, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Top Gun
I don't think I ever completed Top Gun either. But that could be because I spent so much time perfecting SMB :)

Good old Mario. The first game me and my brother could play together without it descending into a fistfight immediately. Granted that it inevitably would do anyway, but at least it took a while longer than the other games.

First console I've had would be the Atari. Second one is Super Nintendo 64. Both were pretty cool and oldskool, unlike the tiresome consoles of nowadays. I've had an MS-DOS computer at the time, so meh.

Just a PC. A regular ol' DOS PC. With wonders such as Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D and Tetris.

Computer: an Intel 486 that ran all the good games of the time. The likes of the King's Quest series and Space Quest.....*sigh* memories.
Console: Sega Master System!! Loved it! I didn't get a Nintendo console until the N64. I was a Sega kid :)

Super Nintendo. We had the NES too, but I was too young and only played it after I had gotten used to the SNES.

Been bashin buttons since I got my Atari 2600! I think that my favorite console of all time is still Super NES. I have a ton of nostalgia for that system. :hammer:

I had a Amiga 1200, I remember falling in love with 'oh no more lemmings','Trolls' and some crazy paint thing it had on it. I miss the fact that games don't come with some code you have to solve before it lets you play the game!what was with that?
...Just found this video. It's more awesome than I remember!

Sorry to bring up such an old thread. This forum's got some gems hidden away.
My first was a Commodore Plus 4. I was 6! (1984) :D I was still very much learning to read at the time (obviously) but I tried my hardest with the spiral bound manual that came with it. I wanted to make things. I remember my mum teaching me about the keys on the keyboard. Particularly the Semicolon button. I actually licked it wondering if it tasted of "Cola". Not the most advanced 6 year old in the world I admit. The games I remember playing were Treasure Island and Fire Ants.
Crikey. All the potential of the internet, ebay and the likes ahead of us and what did I end up doing? Damn! :D Missed an opportunity or two there. Should have stuck at that manual!

Hehe, don't worry about bumping old threads, I quite like to hear new members' opinions on old threads - it revives the topics! :)

My first regular one was the Playstation 1. I still go back to it just to play a bit of Spyro,Tomb Raider, GTA, Lucky Luke, Road Rash ... heck, I still go back and play all the games on it.

Sega Mega Drive, for me. Packed full of a whole three games!
But they were awesome games. Road Rash, Terminator and Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega was awesome.
From there, I went straight to N64 (still pretty much the greatest console of all time), and then to PC.

A ZX Spectrum 48k was my first gaming experience. And what a crappy experience it was. The separate cassette player, the dodgy cable that if nudged was guaranteed to stop a game loading, and that stupid Kempston joystick adapter that, again, if nudged would make a game lock up entirely. And that whine... that extremely irritating whine during game loading. That'll never leave me.

I had the remember the whine distinctly from the Amstrad too - you'd get a couple of seconds' low whining, then it would move up an octave or two for a couple of seconds, then back to low again. Then once in a while, just to mess with you, it'd do it the other way round.
That was, if it didn't eat the casette.

You'll enjoy this then. :D
For those that missed the joy of 80's gaming, yes... it really did take that long to load such basic games.

Then the basement of my house flooded and the console was ruined. :(

If I think really, really far back It would have to be the NES or Snes.
Though, the only one I remember clearly was the Nintendo 64. That console was 'Da Bomb' when I was younger and I feel my tastes in video games have been twisted and tainted with all these 'New Generation' games.
Still I do enjoy from time to time sitting down and playing some Nintendo 64 whether it be at my friends on his actual console or on an emulator(PC or my WI).
More often then not it's an emulator since my friend is rather addicted to COD. A game which I find is going downhill and is just 'A repeat of it's former game with new maps, guns, and a few extra features'.

We initially just had Pong and I think at some point we had one of those hideous Texas Instruments cartridge consoles with the keyboard and the stainless steel casing. First REAL console, in my mind, was the Atari 2600.

I started with the Atari 2600 and then moved on to the Commodore 64 where I remember playing Ultima III and Bard's Tale for long hours.

Had some computer running DOS when I was a little. Not sure what machine it was exactly, but I remember playing Commander Keen, a Wheel of Fortune Game, Chinese Checkers and... something else, can't recall what it was, quite a lot.
We also got an NES. Loved to play Mario and King's Quest V on that.
