Yes, that's right. One of the most exciting games of 2010 is due to hit sometime this fall on Xbox, PS3 and PC.

Along with a typically in-canon press release, they also released a trailer for the game, which is sure to get fans of the previous games dribbling.

Experience all the sights and sounds of fabulous New Vegas, brought to you by Vault-Tec, America's First Choice in Post Nuclear Simulation. Explore the treacherous wastes of the Great Southwest from the safety and comfort of your very own vault: Meet new people, confront terrifying creatures, and arm yourself with the latest high-tech weaponry as you make a name for yourself on a thrilling new journey across the Mojave wasteland. A word of warning, however - while Vault-Tec engineers have prepared for every contingency,* in Vegas, fortunes can change in an instant. Enjoy your stay.

* Should not be construed as a legally-binding claim.

So, are you guys and gals looking forward to this? I have to confess, I am. It's been a long while since I spent as much time on an RPG as I did Fallout 3, but this could be the one to break that record.

Out of interest, is this the MMO that I've been hearing banded about? I know Interplay and Bethseda are thrashing that out in court at the moment.

It's not an MMO.

It's a game just like Fallout 3. Same engine, same gameplay. The main differences are that it takes place on the west coast like the original two games, and is (orgasmically) developed by Obsidian studios. The fellows responsible for KOTOR 2, but more importantly - a studio made up largely of ex-Black Isle employees.

So yes, I'm wetting my pants at the thought of this thing.

Ditto - I can't wait - the Trailer gives away just enough to look exciting :)

And scarily enough, I was going to post this earlier today Jason - I just couldn't find out how to directly link the video and not just a link.

Jason

If I've set things up correctly (that isn't guaranteed... :p), it should automatically convert the link to the video once you click the 'post' button. :)

Well, as far as trailers go, that was singularly unexciting.

The game, however, should be good, being Fallout and all.

I let out a little girly squeal when I saw the NCR flag.

Didn't even notice that, to be honest... hmm... last I recall Nevada isn't too near California...

I did just notice that...
on Xbox, PS3 and PC.
Why is this in PC gaming?

And that...
The main differences are that it takes place on the west coast like the original two games
... isn't Nevada inland a considerable way?

Because I posted this at 9am and I hadn't been to sleep yet. :p

I'll move it now.

Not so much, it's a bordering state, with Las Vegas being very much on the edge.
If you look at this map, you can see several of the locations from orginial fallout games to give you an idea of where that game took place. Reno, Redding, San Francisco Las Vegas is just a bit down and to the right. We probably won't see most (if any) of the original locations (unless they have some fast travel surprise in store for us) but the setting and climate are exactly the same, and I'm sure (as is the case with NCR) some of the originals will spill over into this new game.

Can everyone say "D L C"

They'll probably think it'll be a few extra bucks in their pockets to do some DLC's in the original locations to appease the old fans :)

Konrad

And damnit they'll get mine.

02-06-2010, 04:26 AM
Well, there goes any illusions I had of knowing anything about US geography. Makes much more sense for a NCR guy to be there now.

Konrad

Don't worry, I've lived here for eight years and I still had to look it up. >_>

Rob

Hmm that trailer made me start DL Fallout3 again. I never did get all the way through it but that had everything to do with my horrible skill choices.

So NCR is a California based faction from the previous Fallout games? I can't remember much about the previous storylines.

Konrad
02-10-2010, 06:03 AM
New California Republic is a large city in FO2 that plays a big role in the storyline. The President of NCR during FO2 is an old friend of the Vault Dweller from the original, though seeing as this takes place 42 years after FO2, I doubt we'll see much of that. I will have an absolute orgasm if they let us in Vault 13, or any of the old locations. NCR is pretty much a given, and I wonder how true to the originals it will be.

I am seriously excited about this game. Though deep in my heart I still wish for a return of Isometric fallout. :[

Jason

It would be great if they added it as an option, like they did in Dragon Age: Origins.

Konrad
02-10-2010, 06:43 PM
Oh god yes... I would ISO it up all the way. That's just hoping though, they won't do it.

Rob

I really like the Cali flag and when I saw that in the trailer I did a double take. So it looks like there will be some kind of confrontation with the NCR but what I am wondering is how large the conflict will be. If we are able to gather forces and repel and invasion that nearly destroys NewVegas then I would be impressed.

Ideas on how this will unfold?

MyNameDidntFit
02-11-2010, 04:49 AM
Or will we be helping the NCR? I hope it gives the choice of what to do.

Lance
02-11-2010, 04:59 AM
As long as we have the ability to depopulate the entire game, I'll be happy :)

Konrad

So excited for this game. I played Fallout 3 constantly until I got through the last piece of DLC. Probably will play the whole thing again sometime. Been evil, neutral, a saint, you name it!! I hope that in this game the people from Cali are still super yuppies even though they are wallowing around in radioactive waste and mutations. "Like Oh my god, don't you care about the en VIRonment? Put that cigarette out!!" :)

Konrad

"Like Oh my god, don't you care about the en VIRonment? Put that cigarette out!!" :)

You're not going to see any of that, this is the 50's mentality we're talking about here. Smoking was as big as sliced bread back then. Environmental awareness is a terribly new phenomenon.

Hand on my heart: I've never tried and never will try out any Fallout games, due to the simple fact that most RPG's are dull, boring and pointless games - IMO.

Konrad
02-18-2010, 07:24 AM
I can understand dull and boring... but why exactly do you say RPGs serve a lesser purpose than other games?

Landy

They are way to repetitive. IMO, a good RPG should be more of an open 'sandbox' where the user creates the role playing aspect of the game. I'm not talking about games like '2nd life' (no life). Most RPG's today offer no variety in means of gameplay. You either play your pre-defined role as a warrior-out-to-save-the-whole-world or as mr.evil-the-world-will-be-mine.

Jason
02-18-2010, 11:30 AM
Whilst your point with a lack of variety is true for some examples of the genre (Mass Effect being the main one that springs to mind), the most recent Fallout game in particular was an excellent example of a 'sandbox' RPG. You didn't have to go anywhere or do anything you didn't want to after the first hour or so of storytelling. You had complete control over the way your character acted, developed and where they went. Yes, the predefined 'speech choices' were little more than varying degrees of good and evil, but until technology develops to the point where NPCs can understand and engage in full dialogue, that's going to be a feature of any game where you have to make decisions and engage in conversations.

I highly recommend Fallout 3, even to people who wouldn't normally be fans of RPGs, as it can be played so many ways - you don't have to follow a set path, be it in plot, character progression or even play style.

MyNameDidntFit
02-18-2010, 03:55 PM
They are way to repetitive.
RPGs are no less repetitive, nor any less pointed, than any other genre of game, good sir.

FPS games push you along a predefined path and bid you kill everything that doesn't call itself a friend until you get to the end of a storyline.
RTS games simply have you build a base and an army and destroy the enemy whilst defending your base.
Sports games have you simply play a game over and over again.
Simulators just have you operate whatever machination the simulation simulates in varying settings.

If anything, RPG games are less repetitive than other genres, I would say.

Lance
02-18-2010, 04:12 PM
and bid you kill everything that doesn't call itself a friend

You're not meant to kill things that call themselves friend?

Oh... oops

MyNameDidntFit
02-18-2010, 04:20 PM
Hehe, yes, but I meant that a lot of FPS games do not allow you to.

Lance
02-18-2010, 04:32 PM
Yeah, see that never really stops me - friends are Great human shields

But I do agree... all games involve repetition. It's just a matter of the type of repetition you can tolerate - Civilization games involve the same thing every time - growing to become the most powerful civilization in the world. It just avoids repetition fatigue by adding in so many variables, no game is the same twice.

Fallout 3 - it's so large, to do everything takes 90 odd hours.... then you can choose to do Good, Neutral, Evil to extend that life.

Same with Spiderman: Web of Shadows (same game each time, but 4 different endings based on major choices and which Spidy outfit you use)

Sports game - again, while the same "game" every time - no individual game is the same depending on players, teams, tactics etc

It just comes down to what you personally consider "repetitive" I guess.

Lance

More information found on New Vegas. Apparently you play a delivery boy left for dead and your "package" stolen so it's up to you to find out what the package is and who took it.
So this time you don't start out as a Vault Dweller.

And New Vegas will be a fully functioning town with Casinos etc.

You can read the whole thing at USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/life/20100216/fallout16_st.art.htm)

What an odd place for news on a game to come from... :-/

Anyway, there was another interesting snippet in the article that I know will have fanboys of the series squealing with delight: Bethseda have handed development of this one to their Irvine, California studio - which has a lot of staff who worked on the original two Fallout games in it - so you can almost certainly expect a more 'traditional' Fallout style to the game (not that #3 wasn't excellent, mind...).

MyNameDidntFit
02-23-2010, 01:41 PM
Depending on what you mean by 'traditional', I can't really see it being such. Presuming that FNV will be following FO3's lead in respects to engine and gameplay, there isn't much they can do to be 'traditional'.

Unless you mean dialogue, characters and such, in which case my lack of having played FO3 leaves me at a loss as to how they compare to the older games.

The thing that made me happy in that article was the mention of blue skies -- it seem that, since releasing FO3, they've realised that they do in fact have colours other than brown :)

Konrad

The Fallout 3 dialogues and characters were for the most part completely forgettable. It was really the tone, setting and humour that kept Fallout 3 Fallout.

Too bad I can't read the article being in German (I think), but the pictures give away plenty.

There's also another trailer around, expect to find it up here as soon as I can track it down.
