In a staggering move of shell-shocking proportions, the Member of the Month contest is, until further notice, not going to be around anymore.

There has been a number of factors involved, most of them plain and obvious, in the decision to do this. To make a short story shorter, the contest just wasn't working very well in our small community.

Jason and I have decided to put MOTM on hold for a while, while we rethink the format or come up with a whole new idea. It would be great if we could go on with having a regular contest or activity for you guys to participate in, and you can bet we'll be back with something more suited for our smaller group before long. Jason still has a box of goodies (and infinity 10$ gift cards) to give out in his basement after all.

In the meantime, comfort yourself with the thought that we're probably watching you carefully, trying really hard to find anything you could pass off as being good at. :]

They never tend to garner enough people to be worth it and the majority of members registering because of it will only make the number of posts specified as a minimum to be eligible.

Also: they're not fun.

I really want to get rid of this copy of Frozen Synapse, why not do one more and just put that up for the prize seeing how no one has to pay for it.

How about some kind of referral contest?

We actually had one going for a while but decided against it. The idea was that each year the person with the most referrals who are actually good members - wins. MOTM was actually sort of an extension of this, as the person who referred the most MOTMs would get credit too.

In the end though, referral contests have so many negatives it's hardly worth it. Beginning with less control over how MG is advertised, through encouraging behaviour on other sites that would be shunned here, all the way to just being unfun and mechanical. It's not impossible that referral links won't make a comeback with some sort of incentive at some point, but certainly not as a replacement MOTM.
