i don't care if they say it tastes good. that's just...how could you do that to your body??? geez, i can feel my arteries clogging up just by watching that. YOU'RE EATING AN ENTIRE STICK OF BUTTER, AND IT'S NOT EVEN MIXED INTO ANYTHING! and what's worse...IT'S FRIED!!!

Hehehe, perhaps you wouldn't be a fan of Mexican food. Vitamin T, as we locals call it.

Just to get a few things straight, it IS mixed with batter. Half of the video was all about how it's not just eating a stick of butter on a stick. I'm guessing your arteries clogged up before you finished the video.

On that note, that looks interesting. Though considering I'm not a fan of cinnamon it probably wouldn't be a good match for me. I'd try a stick, that' for sure.

In regard to your health concerns, well, some people just have different priorities in life than others. To some people, living a tasty life is more important than living a long one. A serving of this isn't going to make a difference anyway. It's called a "fair food" for a reason, it's for people to try it for the sake of novelty and experience.

Heh. I made a batch of brownies (legit brownies, not the 'herbal' kind) the other day and used an entire stick of butter. They tasted awesome, but Christ on a Unicycle were those bad boys dense - I'm no slouch when it comes to putting my food away, but even I was struggling to eat a whole one.

Should have deep-fried 'em.

Tacos, tortas, tamales, etc...

Here's some pics:

These are tacos al pastor.

Tamales with mole (pronounced sort of like "mall-eh")

And last, but not least, torta cubana
http://www.pidelo.mx/catalog/images/tortacubana.jpg

Tacos al pastor are tacos (which is meat wrapped in a tortilla, tortilla being a circle of flattened corn dough, sometimes wheat), cooked in some special way. The meat is, I believe, roasted beef leg, and it's typically accompanied by onion, coriander, pineapple and a selection of salsa, typically green, red and hot variants. Each one is about 100-150 calories, and they're tiny, so you usually eat between 4-6.

Tamales are sort of chunks of corn-based dough, steamed or boiled, and wrapped in leaves (usually corn or banana), which are discarded before eating. They are often filled with all kinds of stuff, like chicken, chilies, meat, cheese, etc..
Each one is about 360 calories, and you usually eat 2 or 3.
It's also a tradition to eat them around January and February, in their connection to some holidays around that time of the year, but they are eaten all throughout the year. They are accompanied by a drink, called "atole" (which is also a typical drink during Christmas and nearby holidays), which I believe is made with water, dough, unrefined sugar (called "piloncillo"), cinammon, vanilla and a flavor (like chocolate, more vanilla, fruit, etc..). A single glass of chocolate atole is calculated to have around 340 calories.

And tortas... they are like a sandwich. They use a bread called "bolillo", which is a little bit like a baguette, but shorter and wider. They can be served cold, or more commonly, hot.
The filler is up to personal taste. Popular choices are "milanesa", which is breaded chicken breast (? I don't know how to describe it better than that, really), ham, chorizo, cheese, cochinita pibil (pork loin in an orange sauce), carnitas (friend pork), lengua (beef tongue), etc...
Sometimes a huge combination of those, like in tortas cubanas, which include milanesa, ham, sausage, white cheese, chipotle, eggs, etc...
Those are the main ingredients. Tortas also usually include tomatoes, avocado, onions, jalapeņo, lettuce, and more.
A normal torta with milanesa would be around 630 calories. One should be enough for a normal person, but it's not really uncommon to see people eat more than one in a single meal...

Tacos al pastor

I... I made passionate love to these things literally every time I walked around a corner during my visit to Mexico.

Interestingly enough, explosive diarrhea was also right around the corner. But that didn't stop me... nooo sir. Good trip.

i would love to try a "real" taco one of these days. the only one's i've eaten are from Taco Bell. tamales and tortas sound quite tasty too, even if their calorie count is high. at least it's actually real food instead of a fried stick of butter.

All that fair food makes me ill so I don't touch it. Have you heard of fried kool aid? That's another popular novelty this year.

Yeah....us Americans do like the fatty mcfatfat foods. But I mean, if you can get past the gagtastic facts about fast food I guess it's somewhat...acceptable in moderation?

eh...at least fast foods slightly resemble real food. and some fast foods can be more on the healthy side, like Subway. i dunno how nutritious Wendy's salads are, but they sure are good and make you feel like you're attempting to eat healthy. but yeah. some burger joints can be just as bad as fair foods.

I love the way that a novelty food turns into "all Americans are idiots who eat badly and will die" :/

I'd try it. I mean, I'm sure I've eaten things that are worse for me.

I 2nd this comment actually. While America does have the leading numbers in obesity we are not all idiots, although I do honestly wonder about 90 percent of the nations population. But at any rate, I don't see a big deal being it's fair food, not an every day brunch. Enjoy life, don't live so seriously. It's fine in moderation, we're all guilty of unhealthy foods. Just as long as it does not become a staple diet.
