From an original article on Gamesradar (http://www.gamesradar.com/f/30-commercial-games-released-for-free/a-20100202122153157099).

The best stuff in life is free, and the very best of it is stuff that they used to charge you $40 for, but you can now legally get for absolutely nada!

A lot of the games are rubbish, but there's a couple of real gems hidden away in there. To save you reading, here's the highlights:

Savage 2 - A Tortured Soul (http://www.savage2.com/en/main.php) - an RTS/FPS hybrid that was released just a couple of years ago. It's not the greatest game in the world, but the production values are great, and the game doesn't cost a penny. Can't argue with that.

Beneath A Steel Sky (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/beneath_a_steel_sky) - it's old, but it's a classic. A proper sci fi point 'n' click game, it's got a great plot and a dark sense of humour. Well worth a look.

The Elder Scrolls 1 & 2 (http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm) - the first one weighs in at just 9MB, but the usual Bethseda dedication to their art is still there.

Fallout (http://www.gametap.com/video-games/Fallout-20001223-25.html) - yeah, it's on Gametap, so the goalposts may move at any point, but for the time being it's free, and that means it has to be worth looking at - sign up, download and play, play play!

King's Quest 1 & 2 (http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/games.html) - True classics, I'm sure a couple of people have mentioned them already - and here they are to download - remastered to boot!

Sam & Max 104 - Abe Lincoln Must Die! (http://store.steampowered.com/app/8230/) - Sam And Max are part of gaming history. Their original adventures were fantastic - well-constructed, intelligent and hilarious. The recent releases were very well-received as well, and developers TellTale released the fourth episode in the series for free to promote the game. Download it from Steam!

Operation Flashpoint - GOTY edition (http://www.gametap.com/video-games/Operation-Flashpoint-20000280-40.html#download_Operation-Flashpoint_gametap_435350) - A great game, and one I still play from time to time myself. Once again, it's on Gametap, so don't expect it to be around too long, but take the chance to experience it now while you can.

Those are the best, but there are plenty more in the article. Enjoy!

I use Home of the Underdogs (http://www.hotud.org/) a lot - the most comprehensive legal abandonware site I've found - most games you can download, a few listed are restricted though, but still provide good reviews :)

Brett, why did you have to tell me about this the day I'm due to go back to work for 4 days?!

Goddammit, there's some classics there - Dungeon Keeper 2, System Shock 2, the Discworld games, Grim Fandango...

This could keep me going for months. +rep for you, sir.

Another win in my attempt to take over the world :)

I've had some fun of that site that's for sure - you can get Masters of Orion - I managed to find the old Gold Box Dungeons and Dragons (Pools of Radiance, etc etc)

Trust me, I've lost many a week because of HOTUD :)

Woah woah woah, SS2 AND Grim Fandango.

These snow days could not have come at a better time. +rep!

Egad! Both of those games are not available for download.

Man that sucks Kondrad :(

I found a few games there that weren't available either - but who knows, give it some time and maybe they'll be released for download?

Konnie. Click here (http://www.squakenet.com/abandonwarering/site.asp?idgame=1807&idsite=105&url=http://www.gameswin.com.br/principal.php?pagina=sz/systemshock2).

To the best of my knowledge, this is legally abandonware. Anyone with knowledge to the contrary, give me a shout and I'll take it down.
