Red Dead Redemption - What it is and why you should be excited about it.

It's the sequel to last generation's much-overlooked Red Dead Revolver. Whilst the original was full of potential with a few irritating hiccups and flaws, Redemption aims to solve those and develop on that potential.
With developers Rockstar giving gamers a sandbox world to run round and play cowboys and injuns in, it's drawing the inevitable tagline of 'GTA with horses' from the media, although judging by the early videos and hands-on testing, it deserves to stand on its own merits.

It looks like Rockstar have been working hard on this one - apparently there are over 40 types of animal in the game (including the obvious horses) that can be hunted and presumably sold. As well as this, you can expect changing seasons, random encounters (hangings, hold-ups, animal attacks...) and the now almost standard-issue 'morality system', where helping innocents rewards you with 'fame', and generally being a cad and a bounder will get you a wanted level pretty sharpish. Along the way in the campaign, which stretches across three regions, you can expect to come across the usual Wild West stuff - buffalo, brothels and lots and lots of bullets. You'll also get a few 'saloon' minigames to pass the time (and doubtlessly lighten your purse) to boot.

All in all, if the gameplay is nice and tight there's no reason why this couldn't be a real standout game, and one that could well be the game that Wild West fans have been waiting for.

Just watched the introduction to the game trailer yesterday and wow, is that my type of game or what! I have the game Gun, and I already love that, and this just looks 100 times better than it!

Ah, Gun - what a great little game that was. It's been ages since I played that - it's probably still the best Western game out there. This should be like Gun x10 if what's been seen so far is anything to go by. I'm getting seriously excited for this one, and am waiting to see what the preorder deals are like.

I am having my doubts as to if this game is EVER going to come out! Delayed again! I will definitely get this one. I liked the first one a lot too. I dig westerns in general, and haven't played too many games in this genre. I think the best one is still GUNSMOKE! on Nes :) I wasn't crazy about call of Juarez because the shooting mechanics were piss poor.

Side note, that new show on FX Justified is awesome, it kind of brings the whole western thing to the modern world. Timothy Olyphant's character is my new hero!

I'll be preordering this game this afternoon. Less than three weeks away now, and the game just looks all kinds of cool. I'm sure I read somewhere that the game features 'drop-in' co-op, similar to Borderlands, which, if true, would be fantastic.

The first reviews of this one are starting to creep in, and have lavished all kinds of praise on the game, highlighting the beautiful scenery, authentic feel and variation on offer. The only downside highlighted so far is that there's such a huge gameworld, there's occasionally more terrain than there is action to fill it.

God this game is good. I'll go into more detail in a day or two once I get back from London, but let me say this: If you're on the fence, get it - the game is everything it promised it would be - so far the only gripe I can pick out is that occasionally there are occasional long trips between towns where not a lot happens, but that's about it so far. Expect to see a game of this being planned in the Lobby shortly. ;)

not nuts about the multiplayer in this, but DAMN I love this game! You gotta stick with it a bit if you find it boring, because once you upgrade your dead eye and get some sick guns, it's just an endless night of fun. I do think that it's not all that difficult... but so WHAT?

I think that's tweakable if I remember correctly - I'll have a look later and confirm that, but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a setting for the way the horse controls in the menu.

As for the multiplayer, I actually quite like it - the way it switches between the open 'free-roam' mode where you can more or less do as you like and the more structured game modes is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately at the moment, as a couple have pointed out, there's a lot of idiots on there who want to do nothing more than shoot anything that moves in Free Roam, which whilst it's entertaining for the first two minutes, quickly gets old after about 15 minutes of being chased by the same two guys.

As with anything though, find a good server, and the game's a riot.

I'm a little addicted to this game. I even enjoyed being nommed by a cougar the other night. The only thing that annoys me a tad is the main characters voice..some of his inflections just grate on me, and he looks rough :p other than that it's the bloody tits!

My main gripe with the multiplayer is that there is one GLARING bug that really should have been picked up had any kind of QA been done - occasionally in the Free Roam hideout missions, a NPC will somehow noclip through the floor, but still somehow be able to shoot you (despite the fact you can't shoot him) - This is frustrating enough in the Mine Cart mission, but in the Pike's Basin mission where you actually have to kill all the gang members, it actually makes the mission impossible. This has happened to me twice now in about 4 sessions, so it's either a fairly common bug or I'm massively unlucky.

Got it yesterday, absolutely fantastic game. Immersive, the whole chibang. Not to mention the gameplay is pretty fun and challenging at the same time also. Spent a lot of time already online with some mates hunting bears and random hand to hand fighting on rooftops until someone plumitts off to there death, rofl.

Yeah, Red Dead's multiplayer reminds me a lot of Borderlands in that it's a whole family bag full of fun with a group of you, not so much fun on your lonesome.

I haven't had much luck with the RDR Online free roaming. Might be because I've only played with strangers so far. I did have some fun in a posse with 6 others where we raided one of the towns and attracted all of the lawmen in the area.
