View Full Version : RTS games - what's your favourite unit?

A slightly strange one, but it's inspired by a conversation I had with MyNameDidntFit last night about the merits of GDI vs NoD in the original Command & Conquer.
This then set me off thinking - there have been some pretty awesome units throughout the history of RTS games, from the most gigantic tanks to the most dangerous commando unit. What's yours?
------------------------------------
Mine would have to be the Obelisk of Light from the original C&C's NoD faction. It was a laser turret. Not just a laser turret, but a laser turret with some awesome range. It ripped through infantry and armour with equal ease, and as long as you had enough power to fuel them, you could basically make your base pretty much impenetrable to anything less than a truly monstrous assault. Horrendously overpowered, but a whole load of fun if you had them. :D

Ha. I saw this thread and thought "hmm, this has to be due to that conversation".
For the record, OoLs were not overpowered at all. For starters, each one took more power than an Advanced Power Station generated (as I recall, possibly wrong, but it's at least one Advanced), which meant that your base ended up as a sprawling mass of powerplants nigh impossible to defend unless the map was on your side. Secondly, they were lightly armoured and had a big enough recharge time that a lone OoL could be taken out by a few medium tanks.

That aside, I'll be staying in the C&C franchise, but going with Red Alert's Tanya. IMPORTANT: I do not consider RA3's slut to be Tanya -- I'm talking RA1. She was as bad-ass on the field as she was in the videos. The mission were you infiltrate the Russian base, free her, and then blow the place to kingdom-come on the way out is still one of my favourite RTS missions of all time.
Then there's Tanya in multiplayer. I can't describe the feeling of dread you get when your enemy is allies and you hear that near-maniacal cackle echoing across the battlefield telling you two things: 1) your foe has recruited Tanya, and 2) any infantry or buildings not protected by a tank are dead.

In fairness, anyone dumb enough to leave an OoL sitting there on its own was asking for trouble. If you grouped 2-3 of the things together, the enemy would need a sizable force just to take down your turrets - that's not even counting any other defensive units you'd have.

Overlapping fields of fire with OoLs was great. But, well, all it takes is cannon fodder.
Basic Infantry -> Death.
Tanks -> Destroy OoLs.

I don't know what you two are talking about.
I guess I dug nukes in Supreme Commander. >_>

Devestator from Dune 2 (House Harkonnen special unit)
I loved those things - you'd build a ton and just go crush the enemy base :)
Mammoth Tank from Red Alert and pretty much every unit in Total Annihilation (best RTS ever).
Lots of C&C love here :)
My favorite RTS unit would have to be the protoss carrier from starcraft. I was all kind of awesome once I built 3+ carriers with maxed out its fighter slots. They fill the screen like a hive of bees and do a ton of damg.
