A spinoff from Jason's thread, whch is actually what I originally thought this would be.

So MGers, the RTSing ones at least, how do you play the game?
There are generally two types of players in RTS games (not applicable to new age RTSes like WiC or Warhammer) the basebuilder, and the fighter.

The basebuilder is the player who first and foremost, wants to build a base. He wants it large, solid, impenetrable and RICH. The basebuilder will generally spend the beginning of the game collecting resources and slowly creating a large force to use in the second half of the game.

The fighter on the other hand subscribes to another school of thought. Like his name suggests the fighter wants to FIGHT. Like the basebuilder he will focus on collecting resources, but he will never have enough because he's always building new units and keeping up the pressure on his enemies. The fighter will engage in many small skirmishes between other fighters or the basebuilder's defense turrets.

And then of course, there is the pro- who magically seems capable of both creating a solid base and keeping up pressure on his enemies. But Those men are gods.

So MG... Which RTS player are you?

I've always been a base builder. I think it's far more fun to set up an economy and base, and then launch a large offensive attack on your opponent. I generally just like having the time to plan, organize and strategize in peace. Fighters are, of course, the bane of my existence because it's often difficult to do anything with two lone soldiers pummeling at your base when you have nothing but workers.

This is also the reason I hardly play RTSes online, because it tends to be difficult to get everyone to agree "hey, we're just going to collect resources for the first fifteen minutes". The fighters seem to be the more subscribed to amongst onlline players, probably because it's the more effective strategy.

I'm the same as you - I like time to formulate plans of attack, scout out potential weaknesses in the enemy base and build a force big enough to have a decent scrap with.
I always struggle against fighters as well - I usually repel the first few waves, but struggle as the invading forces get larger.

I tend to be a bunker kinda guy. DoW saw me playing Imperial Guard almost exclusively and setting up defences that no enemy could even get within firing range of.

Cloaked units ahead of the line to extend the FoV of my defences.
Anti-infantry turrets.
Anti-vehicle/heavy infantry weapons emplacements.
Minefields.
Tanks stationed behind the forward line.
Artillery at the back.
Forward barracks between each line.

Though, I do enjoy rushing occasionally. All you need to do is force the bunker player to build units they don't want as in almost every RTS you can get a squad of infantry out before your opponent can get a gun emplacement up.

Basebuilder definitely :)

I think a game between the 4 of us would be boring - we'd just be building bases waiting for each other to attack :P

Nah. Matches between builders are the best matches. Especially in games like Dawn of War where the resource points are contested -- and when they decay. They may start slowly with everyone concentrating on their little corner of the world, consolidating their resources and building up a defence. But, as the game progresses, every player finds themselves needing to seek out the resources that are located in contested territory to give themselves the upper hand. When there are more than two players this is a serious issue as when P1 and P2 are fighting over resource point X, the other player is in a position to exploit the weakness in the other players' defences.

Basically, matches between builders call in tactics so numerous and varied that, IMO, they make for far, far, far better matches than rusher v rusher or rusher v builder.

Pay careful attention to the lack of a "2".

Ooh. I never played the earlier ones so I just assumed they were all the same gameplay style.

The original game and it's expansion are good and proper RTS games, with the only real difference from others of the time being its units being in squads and resources coming from fixed points that you capture.
