As topic says, what was your latest game purchase?

Just bought GTA IV from D2D uk.

At a reduced price, I believe?

(I read an article on it, I've not been rummaging through your credit card bills... :p)

Hehe yeah, forgot to add that it was to a reduced price. I always buy the games when they are on sale, unless its some major game title.

Already have the game on the Xbox 360, but a friend of mine has been trying to get me into the GTA IV MP for pc, so i thought id give it a go. It's def worth the money.

I've got it for PS3 - I wasn't overly impressed to be honest. It's still GTA, it's still a whole crapload of fun, but.... it just feels a bit tired. Like they need to really do something with it rather than just rotate characters and cities.
Maybe I'm just a bit cynical. :-/

I think one of the big criticisms about the PC version (other than the game-killing bugs at launch and the games for windows live thing) was that the system requirements were excessively big if you want to run the game on higher settings?

You might be right. I haven't really worried about any system requirements since i spent more then $2600 on my new rig, which i got 3-4 months back :D

Generally any 'open world' games do eat up a lot of your hardware.

GTA IV on PS3 was, for me summed up by this simple math:

San Andreas + 'Gritty Realism' + Annoying Cousin - Fun

... or maybe I'm just cynical.

Last game I purchased was... I have no idea. Possibly... Dawn of War 2? I don't buy many games as I'm quite poor.

... OK. Wait. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for AU$4? That will be my most recent purchase in a few hours.

Last PC game I bought was the whole Neverwinter Nights set + all expansions for $20 a few months ago. Then I discovered that playing any 3D game on this laptop causes it to overheat after just a few minutes. The rest is history.

May I recommend a laptop cooling pad of some description? I was having the same issues with some games, and this more or less solved them.

A cooling pad may work but it would have to be one that would be fancy enough to cost too much. I've used a simple cooling platform where it simply lifts the laptop off the surface, allowing tons of airflow but the laptop just gets too hot internally.

Jason
12-19-2009, 05:14 PM
I'm using an antec one with a couple of fans built into the base. Assuming your intakes are on the bottom like 80% of laptops, that might make a big difference. It only set me back about £20, too.

It's half-price at the moment, so you should do it. Now.

It's so good that I'm going to go to sleep in a moment so that I can wake up and play Torchlight.
Then I'm going to tell work I'm sick so I can play Torchlight.
Then I'm going to tell my girlfriend I'm sick so I can play Torchlight.
Then I'm going to realise I shouldn't have done that last thing and have to stop playing Torchlight.

Just got Phantasy Star Zero for my DS as an early Christmas gift. Does it count if I didn't actually purchase it? Oh well, it's in here now so it's too late!

May I recommend a laptop cooling pad of some description? I was having the same issues with some games, and this more or less solved them.

My "old" laptop had heating issues, so bad that i could literally boil a cup of coffee on it. My new laptop ASUS UL50V (http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3637&p=2) never gets hot. Although it's not as top notch as a lot of the other laptops out there today, it can run most new games on medium-low setting. I play Torchlight on pretty high settings.

If you want to play the newest games on a laptop today, with "super" setting, you'll most likely bump into problems with the laptop getting overheated. I got a 2500$ desktop, although my laptop has started to be my favorite of the two.

Does renting count?? I just rented The Saboteur played a couple of missions so far, but not as bad as I thought. It's clear that the game needs a lot of work with animation, though. Could've been great if Pandemic wasn't closed I guess!

I might get a new laptop soon and Torchlight will definitely be my first game on it, most MGs are playing it!

I just got Day of Defeat: Source for £1.74 - never played it (despite CKS very kindly giving me a guest pass that I never got round to activating!), but less than £2 for a Valve-made game sounds pretty good to me, and even more so if it's been highly recommended by you guys.

Nice Jason, hook me up when you're on and about for a game or two. So far, (for me) the special steam deals has been nothing but disappointing. Mostly because i already own the games that are on super sale, but also because it's also very random and boring titles that get's the super discount.

Hoping too see a better deal today.

Whilst this one hasn't been as good as the pre-christmas one (which had some amazing deals), I'm using it as a good chance to pick up some games I otherwise wouldn't have played or bought at full price. I wouldn't have been able to justify £7 for DoD: source, but for £1.74, it'd be rude not to!

Last time I went to the store I bought Call of Duty: World At War and Gran Turismo 5 for PS3 and Blazing Angels 2, Burnout Paradise, Silent Hill: Homecoming, Hitman: Blood Money, the GTA IV expansions, and Gears of War 2 for the 360.

The guy working at the store seemed pretty impressed and said something like "enjoy your huge stack of games" when I left. :p

I got Mass Effect and Braid from the Steam sale. Combined they cost just over £5. I don't even know if my current laptop will run Mass Effect, but at £3.29 I'm not going to let that one go past, even if it's just for future play.
As for Braid, it's got pretty good reviews, and for £1.74, I'm willing to take a chance - I usually enjoy indie games, so it's worth a go. :)

Well, I recently acquired Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and also managed to find Uncharted, both for the PS3.

It's only three levels and it's very much recycled elements of the other levels in both concept and presentation. The survivors from the first game are a cameo at best. I don't feel ripped off or anything, I just didn't think it was anything special. Probably good for versus because it's short, a la crash course for L4D1

Let me know when you're looking!

Last game I bought was The Misadventure of P.B. Winterbottom.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/40930/

It's in some ways similar to Braid which was one of my favourite games evah, so I bought it almost immediately. It's not quite as good in terms of puzzles as it has a lot less variety, but it's tough and innovative - with a fantastic poetic story and art direction. At $5 a STRONGLY recommended purchase.
