View Full Version : Blur and in-game Tweeting

Bizarre Creations have included the ability to Tweet in game while driving.

I'm not a huge car racing game fan - though I did get kicks out of NFS: Underground and Forza Motorsport 3. And I'm not a fan of Twitter either.... I don't have anything against it mind, it just doesn't appeal to me.

But is the ability to tweet in-game Really necessary? I mean, what would it really add to the game. It will still be a great, or horrible, game regardless. The ability to tweet isn't going to factor in to whether I'll buy x game. Period.
There's also the matter of the distraction it will cause. You're driving at 150mph and concentrating on trying NOT to crash, why would you want another distraction? Of course you can always just play the game without tweeting, nothing's forcing you to, I just see it as a pointless addition to any game.

Unfortunately it also has another side effect. Many countries are trying to stamp OUT people texting while driving, going as far as to introduce laws akin to using mobile's while driving. I'm not going to go on a rant about this much, since all games pretty much encourage worse (killing etc). But having said that, there's less chance of me getting killed by some maniac with a gun who's trying to "destroy the zombie threat" than there is getting killed by an irresponsible idiot driver who thinks tweeting while driving is fine.

Anyways, for what it adds (compared to what it doesn't) - this addition by Bizarre seems kind of pointless to me.

Does any here actually look forward to it?

There are a whole lot of people that'd would love this. It's a sensible addition, I'd say -- even if not one I'd give a second glance.

It's not a feature I would consider useful in the least bit, but it's not one that I would worry might have disastrous effects on anything... I don't tweet in the first place, I don't know why anyone would want to tweet mid-game, but shit, if they want to - let them.

I checked out the developers website and I think the idea behind the feature is not to tweet mid drive but after you win a race or buy a new car. Still I wonder why the developers spent time putting that in when they could have been smashing bugs or improving gameplay mechanics. Adding social integration to their game helps spread the word so I guess that made more sense to them. Maybe the time invested in the feature will pay off with the exposure over twitter.

I doubt it would have taken very much time at all. As for why, there are two reasons:

The general Twittering peoples' stereotype is that they like to tweet everything. This gives people who like twitter the ability to let people know that they just won a race, bought a car or did something epic -- something they'd like, and we all know that we buy games that let us do things we like.
As a second, and probably more important thing; every tweet made in the game is likely be made about the game -- or at least have a "tweet sent via <game>" mark -- and thus act as an advertisement.

Like I said; I wouldn't look twice at the feature, but I still think it's pretty smart.
