I remember playing Monolith's excellent AvP2 back around '99, and even back then on a 56k the multiplayer was a whole shedload of fun. The upcoming multiplatform release (PC, X360 & PS3) promises to bring that fun with it to a whole new generation.
Whilst details on the campaign modes are sketchy, the multiplayer mode is clearly what's going to appeal to a lot of punters, and it looks like developers Rebellion have been working hard on it. Featuring up to 18-player deathmatch modes, it allows players to control any of the three species (Xenomorph, Predator or Marine) in a variety of game types.
Obviously each species has its own advantages and drawbacks, such as the Alien's ability to climb and run along more or less any surface it chooses, the Predator's invisibility, and the Marines' array of heavy weaponry, and Rebellion are working hard to iron out any major imbalances between the species.
However, it's not all about Deathmatch, you know. The game also features a 4-player co-op 'survival' mode where players control 4 Marines battling a constant horde of CPU-controlled Xenomorphs, a 'Predator Hunt' mode where a team of Predator players attempt to hunt down a single Xenomorph player, and perhaps most interesting of all, 'Infestation' mode, where a whole squad of Marine players battle a single Xenomorph player. However, for each kill the Alien makes, his victim respawns as a fellow Xenomorph. The game continues until all humans are dead, or until the timer runs out.

All in all, it looks like Rebellion have revived a franchise that has (in the gaming world at least) remained dormant for far too long - only time will tell if they've made the most of the enormous potential this license grants them. Expect the game sometime in early 2010.
