To add context: my father drinks all sorts of less-sugar-than-the-real-version beverages due to the medication he's on, so there are plenty in the house and I always make myself try at least one of each variety he brings home.
So, now, I'm sitting here with a can of Sprite Zero and, like Coke Zero and the rest of their ilk, it's a god-awful abomination that is a pall upon the face of its fathers. Anyway, I understand the drinking of things like these for health/medical reasons, but I'm curious: does anyone actually choose to drink this sort of crap for the taste?

Uh, no.... hell no would I drink anything with Diet or Zero in the title.
Aside from the horrid taste, I believe (but don't quote me on this) that certain ingredients added to these drinks (Aspartame being the main) is actually worse for you than what's in your normal soft drinks.
But I don't really care about the controversies, I just hate the taste
Give me normal coke any day of the week (preferably mixed with Wild Turkey :))

Yeah, I think that is the case. It's only really when you have something specifically requiring that you have very little sugar that you'd force yourself to drink these... these horrid blights on beverage kind.

I don't mind Pepsi Max, and I'll drink Sprite Zero if the other isn't available, but anything else is poison as far as I'm concerned.
A while ago I became a little concerned at the amount of sugar I was ingesting (I don't drink Tea or Coffee, so Coke etc is generally my main drink - at 40% of your recommended daily intake of sugar per can, and me getting through 4-5 cans on a hot day, that's a bit more than I really wanted to be taking in, so I just mix it up a bit - I have a couple of mini-fridges near the computers, one with 'regular' drinks, and one with low sugar varieties.

My mom for example, drinks the "zero" versions for taste reasons. And I understand her completely. Initially I was unsure as to whether she's gone insane, but she claimed that once you get used to the taste - it's just fine.
So I drank nothing but her beverages for about two months and lo-and-behold, I don't mind one bit anymore. Although she actually prefers the diet versions, I don't really care which one I drink anymore. They're both yummy in their own little way.
I have been trying to track down the diet caffeine free version of Dr. Pepper but I am having a hard time finding it. All the "zero" branded sodas are readily available but I have not tried one. I'm also concerned with how much sugar I consume so I will probably be grudgingly moving my soda habit into one of the zero brands. I think I will buy one of each and then settle on whatever tastes the closest to the original. I hear they all taste watered down but I could use a little more water during my day :)

I like diet coke and pepsi becuase I don't really like sweets that much at all. I don't eat candy or anything like that. However, I think that Coke Zero tastes like chemicals. Not for me.

The only Diet drink I'd drink just for the taste is Diet Irn-Bru.
Normal Irn-Bru is better like but yeah, if that's all that's there fair enough still tastes guid.
I want Irn-Bru now ... damn you haha.
But to be honest, diet lemonade, sprite zero, fanta zero and whatever else is okay.
I wouldn't consider them horrid.
But I don't drink much fizzy juice anyways.
And I hate cola/pepsi.
