Despite the lack of dedicated server support, the game has become pretty popular. Although I've never been much of a fan of the Call Of Duty series, I'm actually thinking about buying it.

It's pretty insane that you've gotta pay 80$ for the basic Steam version, but i guess that's something they can do because of the demand.

Anyone else thinking about getting it?

My brother bought it for PS3 and I plan to play it for the first time once I'm done perusing the forums.

Depending on how things go I may buy the PC version for MP, but I'm really quite sceptical.

I have it for the PS3 and it's alright. I can't recommend paying the extra cash for it right now, particularly the PC version, which I've heard nothing but bad things about.

The so called "matchmaking" doesn't work as its supposed too. People that download stuff while hosting a server, so everyone else lags but them. Joining a friend through the "friends" list, do not work. There is apparently lots of stuff that does not work. PC players are becoming a real minority, and we're stuck with shitty console ports.

The friends issue was also a major problem on PS3 at first. It seems to have been patched now though.

I have to say though, it certainly looks like this is a very poor quality port.

Borderlands, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, Modern Warfare 2.. all crappy console ports, without any dedicated server support. The problem is that most game dev's today, do not make enough money on the pc players, because the console market is so much bigger. We've become a minority, stuck with crappy console ports.

I can understand developers' desires to get rid of dedicated servers, I really can - it's not a particularly efficient way of doing things, plus they're expensive to purchase and maintain, not to mention at some point in the future the decision may have to be made to 'pull the plug' on little-used ones.
However, the current 'replacement' options aren't good enough right now, and it shows. On a platform like the PS3 or Xbox where the entire system has been designed to run in the 'peer to peer' method, I can understand it, but the PC system isn't set up to run like that, and it's hurting multiplayer gamers.

We will most likely see more and more games going down the same road as MW2. The money made from PC sales is simply too small compared to console. I can't blame them, because they're in it for the money, like most. It only sucks, because playing a FPS on a console is something i never will get used too, nor do i want too.

From what I've played so far it's nothing new really... though I've played a few hours and already gone through an army worth of characters and that's kind of annoying me.

Borderlands.. all crappy console ports
I'm on my second playthrough of the PC version of Borderlands... might I ask what is wrong with it? I've found it to be a brilliant game.

I just bought it last night. I was skeptical, and kind of pissy at first, but I went over to play it at a friend's house and after seeing that the lag really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be - and (holy wow!) the game is actually entertaining I said screw it.

Yes, the game is a big fuck you to the competitive gaming community, and yes I don't think anybody really understands WHY IW did what they did, but hey... I don't play competitively, and I've never been one to get hung up on logic.

Nothing wrong with BL, it's actually pretty good. Just used it as an example bigger game titles released lately, that has no dedicated server support, or at least a better system for the MP.

In it's defense, considering the "jump-in" style of Borderlands co-op, I don't think most people expected to have dedicated server support. As far as I know it would be pretty much impossible to jump onto a dedicated server whenever you feel like it without breaking continuity of the game.

Good point. I'm not sure how the MP works on the console, but for most, console setup does not work well on PC. Id expect at least a better system for the MP, being the game is based around coop.

Ah, alright. The MP system has been fine for me, either way so I'm happy with it :)
