I was really into this game at first, but upon further review... eh. It seems that they have updated the combat interface and really nothing else. It's a completely linear experience and the story makes not one lick of sense. It looks gorgeous, but after playing Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout, even Fable (which I don't like) this game seems behind the times in everything but graphics.
Thoughts?
I have read a few reviews and from what I can tell it's another JRPG that looks great but doesn't do anything stellar. That would be fine if this was FF3 but this is FF13 and its time to do something different.

Eh, I've enjoyed all the FF games so far (IX being the mandatory exception to the rule), and I'll probably enjoy this one too. I think Square Enix know what they're good at and what works for the series and they're sticking to it. I love a good open-ended RPG as much as the next guy, but sometimes I'm quite happy to stick my brain in a bucket and be taken for a ride by a good story and stunning visuals. It's the gaming equivalent of something like Avatar - it doesn't make you think much, but it doesn't try to - it's eye candy and it knows it.

Am I the only one who appreciates the message and character portrayal in Avatar?

I have to be honest, I haven't actually seen Avatar - my statement was mainly borne from critic reviews and word-of-mouth. :p

I am willing to give avatar a chance really based solely on James Cameron's body of work. He just hasn't really made any bad movies. he hasn't made that many, but it's still I high batting average. I don't necessarily mind being taken on a ride in FF13, but they took out all the challenge of it. There's no exploration, there's not even any conversations. Not sayin I hate it, but I'm not totally thrilled. I've been playing a lot of Assassins Creed 2 lately, which is fun but also pretty easy. Loved Mass Effect, but it wasn't all that hard. Guess I need a challenge :)

IMO, Avatar was boring as hell. It was pretty, yes, but otherwise I was almost asleep wondering when the hell it was going to finish.
As for the message: maybe if they knew what subtlety was it'd be OK, but it basically just shoves it in your face over and over like a 13 year old tea-bagging on Halo.
